Drugged, Tied-Up & Held Captive For 24 Days By A P**dophile......And Her OWN Mother Was Behind It All: The Shocking Story of The Kidnapping of Shannon Matthews

(From left: Craig Meehan. Middle: Karen Matthews. Right: Michael Donovan. Picture credits: The GuardianBBC)

*Please be aware that I will be talking about disturbing issues in this post to do with child abuse and abduction. As always I will try to be as sensitive as I can be with the facts without taking away from the facts of the case*

This was a case that didn't just shock and outrage the small town of Dewsbury, West Yorkshire (England), the whole of the UK were incensed by this whole twisted nightmare that left your head spinning. Not long after the shocking Madeleine Mcann case was brought to our attention (the sad case of the young child who mysteriously vanished whilst on a holiday with her family...that's a whole huge case in itself which often brings up strong emotions to this very day as well as very tense debates as to what really happened to Madeleine but for this post, the focus is on the Shannon Matthews story), back home in England we had what appeared to be a shocking abduction on English soil.

The location for this heartbreaking situation was a working class area known as 'Dewsbury Moor' in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire. The area had seen better days and like a lot of towns in the UK with the shut down of a lot of local industries, unemployment and crime was rife but the people who lived there did their best to get by. On the 19th of February 2008 the police received a strange phone call from a woman claiming that her daughter had failed to return home from school. Karen Matthews (32) was on the phone telling the operator that her nine year old daughter was missing, her voice sounded strained but there was something to it, almost like she was putting it on a bit. Anyway, the police took the matter very seriously and to their credit they were on the scene in a flash. Everything moved so quickly and then the media were camped up outside of Karen's house where she lived with her younger boyfriend, Craig Meehan (22) and her children.

Karen, despite her frumpy style, unkempt hair and huge bags under her eyes (looked a lot older than her 32 years) never seemed to have much trouble in the boyfriend department although they didn't hang around for very long. She had various children by different fathers and her home was like a 'mad house' according to locals. Despite having young children in the house, Karen and Craig would often have various friends around at the weekends and sometimes on week nights too, drinking, playing loud music, their home seemed to be the local hang-out place for some of the locals. Karen came from a big family and Craig was well known in the area too. Despite the lack of opportunities in the area and the levels of crime, the community was quite close-knit and everyone knew everyone so when it was announced that Shannon was missing, everyone stepped up to support Karen and Craig.

There was a lot of drama at the time because a lot of people from the area felt like the press were trashing them in the newspapers because they were working class. When Madeleine Mcann was reported missing, her parents, who were financially stable Doctors, were treated in a respectful manner and given money and all kinds of support. People noticed a class difference and voiced their concerns.

In the time that followed from Shannon being reported missing, the police and the country went from feeling sympathy for Karen to suspicion to utter hatred by the time the case had come to an earth shattering conclusion.

This case was taken very seriously and it was (to this date in December 2024) known as the second most highly investigated case in West Yorkshire Police's history, right next to the horrific serial killer case of Peter Sutcliffe (The Yorkshire Ripper). Hundreds of police officers were on the case, hours and hours of overtime, hours of searches, endless streams of tax payers money as well as other donations was poured into the search for Shannon. Local volunteers gave up their free time to spend time walking for hours and miles on foot looking for any clues as to where this little girl might be. Posters were everywhere, t-shirts were printed and worn by all of the locals including Karen and Craig. There was no stone left unturned in the search for Shannon.

As the hours turned into days, the news, media and general public were glued to the Matthews story. I remember watching everything unfold on TV and seeing the information posters everywhere, even in supermarket bathrooms. We all hoped and prayed that Shannon would be found safe and well but as time went on we all felt a terrible feeling inside and there was something else that bothered everyone too...Karen's behaviour, there was just something about her that you couldn't put your finger on. Then stories started to spread like wildfire, because the story had been heavily reported on by the newspapers and media, Karen and Craig were treated a bit like celebrities. Just like the disgraceful Philpott parents's Mick and Mairead (who had started a fire in their own house on purpose which resulted in their children's deaths), Karen and Craig were lapping up the attention as well as the 'freebies' that the heartbreaking situation brought. As well as free pizzas, alcohol, clothes etc (by the way, they were still having parties at their house with all of this going on), a trip to the local supermarket was like an episode of 'Supermarket Sweep'. Just like the Philpotts, Karen and Craig were told to fill up a shopping cart with whatever essentials they needed so they took advantage and were back and forth to the supermarket stocking up on everything and eating like Kings and Queens. Such actions left a sour taste in people's mouths especially the police who were growing increasingly concerned by Karen's lack of anxiety towards the fact that her daughter was actually supposed to be missing.

As I mentioned earlier, the sympathy quickly started to run out because Karen and Craig were such terrible actors and just couldn't help letting their masks slip. Watching the pair of them on the TV you had to remind yourself that Shannon was actually missing because they didn't act like it. There was even a segment on the news where they persuaded Karen to make an appeal for information. Well, there was no chance of an Oscar in Karen's future because it was just terrible, she held up a cuddly toy (which wasn't even Shannon's) and in between various words she would do a few sniffles and tried her best to cry. All I can remember is her saying ''Come home, my beautiful princess daughter, please come home'' or words to that effect. Normally in these types of tragic situations, your heart goes out to a parent who's pleading for their child to return home but something was really odd here.

Reporters started knocking on all the doors in the area looking for gossip and juicy stories about Craig and Karen in return for cash. Of course their so-called friends and family members lapped this up and then all of these stories came out that Craig had been violent towards Shannon in the past which he denied. It just wasn't looking good for the pair of them. Lucky for Karen she had a very good friend who (for some reason) stood by her even though she had suspicions herself. Karen's friend Julie was a major factor in this case because she was the one who finally got Karen to tell the truth.

Night after night we all watched the news hoping for a positive update on Shannon, we found out that Shannon had been through a lot in her young life, despite being part of a large family, she was quite isolated and would always be in her room. She was a very quiet and lonely child who was often bullied at school. She'd reportedly written on her bedroom wall that she wanted to go and live with her biological father, Leon Rose.

Suspicion towards Karen and Craig continued to grown until out of nowhere a news report flashed across television screens across West Yorkshire and beyond on the 7th of March 2008, Shannon had been found!!! She was alive and well, it was incredible!!! All of us who had been following the case were overjoyed and for myself I began to think that I had made a mistake in judging Karen because here Shannon was, alive and well and all set to be returned to her family......or was she?

Tongues started to wag when it appeared that Shannon wasn't being returned home, people were puzzled. in the midst of the excitement and celebration everyone noticed that Karen didn't appear to be smiling that much. Once the dust had settled and the realisation that Shannon was ok, the questions began of where the hell was she all that time? The police were keeping quiet in the beginning but there was a very strange and uncomfortable feeling in the air.

It was reported that she had been found at a relative's house which left everyone confused but as more details began to emerge everyone was left feeling sick to their stomachs. The truth of the matter was, Karen had been watching the whole Madeleine Mcann case on TV a year earlier and saw all of the money and attention the McCann family were getting, she came up with a plan with Craig's Uncle, a man named Michael Donovan (who was also a p**dophile) that he take Shannon for a while and they pretend that she'd been abducted so that they could spilt any reward money. The plan was that Michael was going to pretend to be the one who found Shannon. At the time of Shannon's disappearance a reward that was raised totalled £50,000. The plan backfired when a neighbour contacted authorities because they'd heard strange noises coming from his flat even though he lived alone and the noises were happening when he was out of the house.

More disturbing details of what Shannon actually went through in Michael's flat emerged. He had drugged her with various pills and tied her up with a length of rope where she could only reach the bathroom. He would also keep her hidden under a bed. I'm sure you'd agree with me that we don't even want to know what else this poor child went through having being trapped for 24 days with a p**dophile. Karen knew about his history with children, apparently in her own family she was related to 17 p**dophiles and didn't seem to have any issues with having these things around her vulnerable children.

(Michael Donovan. Picture credit: The Sun)

In the safe hands of the authorities, Shannon had a serious of medical tests and psychological tests done. They had found that she had been given various substances for longer than the 24 days, Doctors claimed that Shannon had been given various drugs for at least a period of two years before her abduction. More questions were raised why this poor girl was given a constant cocktail of drugs, what had been going on in that house, the house that she lived in with her mother? Were the other kids fed drugs too? The whole situation was horrendous and just when you thought it couldn't get any worse, the police who had been searching through Karen's house, had been examining Craig's personal computer and found tons of horrific child abuse pictures that were some of the worst that they had ever seen.

It appeared that poor Shannon as well as her siblings, were surrounded by utter filth from start to finish. Their mother was a horrendous woman who knew that she was putting her children at risk and who knows exactly what happened to these poor children.

When the police turned up at Michael Donovan's flat and found Shannon and the circumstances in which she was being held, they couldn't believe their eyes. Michael wasted no time in spilling the beans to the police about Karen's part in the whole thing. Craig claimed that he knew nothing about the plot even though it was his uncle who's flat that Shannon was being drugged and held in. Craig had enough problems of his own since he was outed as a disgusting p**dophile himself. At the station before the whole thing erupted, Karen was brought to the station to confirm that the little girl found in Michael Donovan's flat was indeed Shannon, for a mother who was supposed to be beside herself with worry, she just stood there and confirmed that the girl was indeed Shannon and that was that. She didn't seem to care because she knew all along that Shannon was alive, she knew where she was the whole time. The whole thing had been a sick performance with Shannon being put through hell for the sake of money.

Everyone in the community (even though many had their suspicions) were horrified when they found out the full details of what had actually been going on. Karen, Craig and Michael were now in police custody and Shannon was in care of the authorities with the rest of Karen's children being placed elsewhere. It was clear that she wouldn't be seeing Shannon again or the rest of her children for a very long time. As for her and Craig's relationship? As a last ditch attempt at trying to put on a pathetic display of human decency she claimed that she had dumped Craig and had no idea that he had all of that disgusting material on his computer.

On the 4th of December 2008 both Michael Donovan and Karen Matthews were found guilty of kidnap and false imprisonment. Both were sentenced to eight years in prison. Karen has since been released and Michael died a few years ago of cancer in hospital.

Craig Meehan was sentenced in September of 2008 for only 20 weeks for having child abuse images on his computer. He was never charged as being part of the kidnap plot. Since his release from his short stint in prison, he has reportedly moved house about eight times. He's tried to change his appearance and doesn't wear the glasses or baseball caps but people still recognise him. Every time local residents find out that he's in their town, authorities move him to another location. It's actually shocking to learn that he was back living in Dewsbury close to a school, again he was spotted by the locals and moved elsewhere. His location as of 2024 is unknown, he's probably in Scotland or something but that just me speculating. He seems to have been moved all over the place in West Yorkshire and keeps being recognised so authorities may have decided just to move him out of the country. Isn't it ridiculous that we have struggling families in this country and homeless people who don't have a place to live but scum like Craig Meehan are chauffeured from place to place, they always seem to find homes for these individuals.

Karen has never shown remorse for what she did to her own daughter, in her mind, Shannon was not murdered and her plan was never to have Shannon murdered so it can't be that bad. She is unbelievable and will forever be known as one of Britain's worst mothers. In my opinion the three of them got off lightly, Shannon has to live for the rest of her life with the horrible memories of what they did. She will be aware of what happened and the utter betrayal of her own mother. Shannon (if that is still her name, I imagine maybe her name was changed?) started a new life with a new family after she was well enough to leave care. She continued to receive regular counselling sessions for years as she suffered terribly with nightmares. I hope that she was able to move on in some way with her life and I hope she is out there somewhere feeling loved and happy. We all want the best for her and respect her privacy. As for the rest of Karen's children, I have no idea what happened to them. We can only hope that they moved on to better things too. I have no idea if Karen is in touch with any of her children but I do know that her friend Julie still remained in contact with her during her time in prison and beyond.

Some people may not understand how Julie could remain friends with such a person but from what I have seen of Julie in her interviews, she comes across as a warm, almost counsellor type individual. She's willing to look past what Karen has done and think's that Karen is just mentally ill. Whatever the story is between Karen and Julie that's their business but I don't think the majority of people could ever give Karen Matthews the time of day. There are some things in life that just cannot be forgiven.

If you have made it this far in the post, I thank you so much and appreciate your time. I realise that this is my last post of 2024. I'm taking a break over the Christmas holidays (give my brain and fingers a rest lol) and indulging in all things food, music, movies, close friends/family and fun. It's important not just for myself but for you too, to kick back sometimes and treat yourself to some proper relaxation and as well as celebrating and being thankful for what we have, giving to our loved ones and thinking about the deeper meaning of Christmas which I always do. My grandmother passed away on the 18th of December many years ago so it's a very personal date for me and I always light a candle. I don't look at this time of year as doom and gloom, i love it because my grandmother loved Christmas so much, she would decorate her house and make Christmas dinner, she would make a huge deal every year. I celebrate her life even more at Christmas and I have carried on a lot of her Christmas traditions in tribute to her.

I wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas, if you celebrate and if you don't well all the best for 2025 anyway. Here's to the start of a New Year and new beginnings.

I will see you in the next post....in 2025 x

Ted Bundy In His Own Words

(Ted Bundy. Picture credit: sfgate)

I have written about Ted Bundy a few times on this blog which may come as no surprise if you are a regular reader. I don't think there is anyone in the true crime community who hasn't written about him. Whenever we think about Serial Killers, the likes of Ted Bundy and Jeffrey Dahmer are maybe two of the first infamous murderers that we think of when quickly put on the spot.

[Check out my previous two posts about Bundy for the full background on his crimes: The Many Faces of Ted Bundy and 10 Facts You May Not Know About Ted Bundy

One of the many things that was disturbing with Ted Bundy was his way with words, he could be as charming as charming could be one minute but then switch to this cold, unfeeling and sinister character the next. He certainly knew how to play people and get them under his control to some extent and that wasn't just with women, he was able to manipulate men too.

Listed below are some of Ted Bundy's quotes, straight from the horses mouth or so the saying goes. It makes for some chilling reading so please be aware....

''I am the most cold-hearted son of a bitch you will ever meet.''

''I don't think anybody doubts whether I've done some bad things. The question is what, of course and how and, maybe even most importantly why?''

''When you feel the last bit of breath leaving their body, you're looking into their eyes. A person in that situation is God''

''We serial killers are your sons, we are your husbands, we are everywhere. And there will be more of your children dead tomorrow.''

''I didn't want to hurt them, but I had no other choice.''

''I am not a monster, I am just misunderstood.''

''I am not the person everyone thinks I am, I am something more''

''I don't feel guilty for anything. I feel sorry for people who feel guilt.''

''I didn't know her name, she was just a faceless victim to me.''

''I am not an animal, I'm not crazy, I just wanted to kill.''

Quick True Crime Chit-Chat With Jo • Is It Really Bad In The UK?, What's In Store For 2025? Am I moving to America? • Your Questions Answered & More.....

(Blog author. Jo Donnelly otherwise known as Caledonian Kitty. For all links see: Linktree)

So, before I put my pens and highlighters back into my black Killstar pencil case (yes, I have one of those) and put the lid down on the laptop for the Christmas break. I offered you all a chance to send me some questions you may have. I wasn't expecting to get so many but I've narrowed it down to 10. Thank you for all of your questions and the ones that don't feature here will still be answered and responded to in your message and email inboxes.

Get cosy and let's get to it....

1) I can't wait for your book, will it be out next year?

I'm not going to say 100% because I am still working on it and I'm a bit of a perfectionist so right now I am hoping but watch this space....

2) Are things really as bad in the UK as seen on social media?

Yes, the UK is a mess and it's quite scary what is going on right now. It seems that you can't do a thing without some sort of consequence. A lot of beautiful places are getting destroyed and a lot of people in our country are being neglected, people who have been here all their lives and payed taxes are suffering. It's appalling what's going on.

3) What do you think of people being jailed for taking part in protests in the UK?

It depends what their actions were, I don't condone violence. I saw footage of police vans being set on fire, items being thrown, I don't condone that. But, just standing there and in a mature and well spoken manner, stating your thoughts in a way that is not racist but is about your care for the safety of your children and yourself, that is not wrong and people should not be punished for it. Some people forget that we have put up with a lot in this country, we've endured cover-ups and seen innocent people harmed and no justice brought but the perpetrators rewarded. What we saw with these riots was people being sick and tired but some of them expressed themselves in the wrong way. Support should have been given as well as counselling and anger management to the people involved, their concerns listened to, but instead we see hard-core criminals released early from prison and people who protested thrown behind bars. Now, I just want to be clear that if you commit violence you should pay the price but just standing there in the crowd or shouting a few words, does not warrant a prison sentence in my opinion. I saw that one of the men jailed was a grandfather in his 60s who had no criminal record and suffered from mental health issues and sadly took his own life. There was another man who was grieving over the death of his best friend who'd died just weeks before and he was put in prison. There was more to this than was taken into consideration.

4) Are you really moving to America?

Yes, it's been a dream of mine for a long time and I will still be back to visit, especially Scotland.

5) What was the last true crime documentary that you watched?

I actually watched Waco: American Apocalypse (again) on Netflix.

6) Which true crime book is your favourite?

I don't have a particular favourite but one of the books that I consider essential in my Serial killer research is The Encyclopedia of Serial Killers by Michael Newton. I just need there to be an updated version.

7) I want to make a few case requests, can I email you?

Yes, you can email me anytime at jocaledoniankitty@gmail.com

8) Will you be bringing back your merch?

Yes! my merch will be coming back in 2025, watch this space!!

9) What do you hope for 2025?

I like to hold my cards close to my chest, I'm all about manifesting things. I do wish great things for my readers though.

10) What's your favourite thing to drink on Christmas Day?

Bucks Fizz, I just love it!

Thanks again for these questions, I thought they were really good and have left me feeling in more of a positive mood than I was before. I hope you enjoyed reading my answers.

So here's to 2025, I hope you have a fabulous Christmas and New Year. I will be back to share more posts in 2025. Thank you as always for your support x

My Top 5 Most Popular True Crime Cases For 2024 (And My Honest Thoughts)

(Blog author: Jo Donnelly aka Caledonian Kitty. All my links can be found on Linktree)

Well, can you believe that it's almost the end of 2024? As you know, I've kept things busy here on True Crime With Caledonian Kitty and it's good to look back over this year and see which posts have been more popular than others.

Before I list my most popular posts below I would just like to say THANK YOU again for all of the support this year, it is very much appreciated and always will be. So let's get into it.....

1) The Mysterious Death of Alexa Kenin

This post still continues to grow and grow years later! The sad and tragic story of Actress Alexa Kenin's death is a story that still affects people to this day. I still see comments and emails from people who grew up watching her and whenever 'Pretty in Pink' is on or there's an anniversary of the movie being released, fans pop back up again to share their memories of Alexa. I'm extremely grateful for the interest in this post and that Alexa's legacy continues to go on.

2) The Real Story Behind 'Stay The Night' (The Jimmie Sue Finger Story)

Who'd have thought that a TV movie that I had watched with my mother years ago would lead to me years later, writing about the very story that the film was based on. The portrayal of Jimmie Sue Finger by the incredible Barbara Hershey is a favourite of all of her performances over the years and everyone wants to know the real story behind it. For years it was very difficult to get a copy of the movie but someone uploaded it to Youtube a few years ago and since then, my coverage of the story has gone crazy.

3) Toxic Relationship: The Tracie Andrews Story

Back in 2019, I wrote this four part series about this shocking case and the sad anniversary of Lee's murder which has just been (1st of December) and as is usually the situation, relatives or a documentary may have been posting about the case elsewhere leading to people looking up the case and finding my articles. I remember Lee's daughter contacting me about the posts and at first I was worried that I had caused offence and offered to remove them but she was very positive about it, thanking me for helping keep the story alive and letting people remember about what happened to her father. The abuse that Lee suffered in this relationship was hell and domestic abuse towards men was something that wasn't talked about back in those days. Today we are becoming a bit more open minded and giving these horrible issues that attention that they should have. The truth is, that Tracie didn't just fly off the handle one random night, she had been putting this guy through hell for a very long time. There's people who will say that she's served her time etc but can someone really change that much? Let me know your thoughts.

4) The Acid Bath Murderer: John George Haigh

A case that still very much shocks anyone who stumbles across it. It is the stuff of nightmares, deceased bodies being dissolved in acid, very horrific and gruesome! Books have been written and TV series made and it's a wonder why this has popped up at number 4 but people seem to be searching for information about John George Haigh again.

5) The Carol Maltesi Case

And finally, the 5th of the most popular cases is the shocking murder of Only Fans model Carol Maltesi, otherwise known as Charlotte Angie. We are seeing a lot of horrific stories where dreadful things have happened to Only Fans content creators. It's a scary situation if obsessed fans and stalkers manage to track you down. I've written a few cases on this blog about people who have been murdered by crazed stalkers. The details in this post were harrowing and Carol had to be identified by her tattoos, that's how horrendous it was.

So, there you have it! I hope that everything that I have shared with you here this year has been of some value and information to you. I always aim for my readers to come away from my posts feeling like they've learned something about a case that they never knew before.

I appreciate all of the support and I'm looking forward to 2025 to bring you more content so I hope you will join me for that.

Merry Christmas (if you celebrate the holidays) and Happy New Year for 2025.

Take care and I'll see you in the next post x

The Case That Horrified America & The World: The Shocking Death of Caylee Anthony....But Was Her Mother To Blame?

(Casey Anthony. Picture credit: People)

*Please note, as you may see by the title of this post. I will be covering the disturbing case of Caylee Anthony's death and the circumstances that may or may not have surrounded that and the trial of her mother, Casey. I will be talking about child abuse, neglect and murder. As always, I will try to be as sensitive as I can with the details without taking away from the facts of the case.*

The heartbreaking death of little three year old Caylee Anthony from Orlando, Florida, is and always will be, a great pain in the heart of anyone who followed the case and hoped so hard for justice to be served. So many people took Caylee to their hearts and it's clear to see that no matter how many years have gone by, the strong emotions that this case brings out in people, is still very much there.

I've been contacted numerous times to cover this case and I was reluctant to write about it because of the fact that this little angel was treated in such a disrespectful and cold manner (it's always difficult to write about cases involving children). I followed parts of the trial as it was happening and that was bad enough, it made me feel angry as it did a lot of people.

I found it a very hard case to follow because it had more twists and turns than a roller coaster and some of the ridiculous things that were shared in the courtroom made me scratch my head a few times that this was allowed to take place. The harrowing details, the ridiculous and obvious far-fetched lies along with the behaviours of those involved just baffled me. And then there was that verdict that shocked not just America, but the world.

By the time the verdict came around I saw the reaction of people and it was mostly of utter outrage, shock and disbelief. Casey Anthony is a free woman as many of you know and there's a lot of people out there who believe she is a murderer, but what do you think? This case has been gone over so many times that another reason I was unsure as to write about it. I didn't think I would bring anything new to the story, but I'm always been told that my readers want my take on a particular case, my way of telling it and possibly my opinion.

So, here we are, going back over this shocking case and looking at some of the details. I would love to hear your thoughts on this at the end of the post (either in the comments section below or in confidence via my email at jocaledoniankitty@gmail.com). It's such a controversial story that it divides opinion, I feel it's important to hear what everyone has to say, after all, none of us were there but it's human nature to have our own opinions about what we think may have happened and what our views may be of Casey Anthony's behaviour and the behaviours of that of her family.

It's hard to know where to begin with this case so I suppose starting with a bit of background into Caylee's Mother, Casey might be an appropriate place to start. Casey Marie Anthony was born on the 19th of March 1986 to parents George and Cindy. Her parents already had a child, her brother Lee so it seemed like the perfect set up in the beginning, one girl and one boy. However, early on there were some red flags in Casey's childhood. There was a lot of tension between Casey and Lee growing up, both wanting to be the centre of attention and Casey was known to be a bit over-dramatic and a bit of a fantasist at times. She would tell little lies and it was viewed as something that she would grow out of as it was quite common for children of a young age to make up stories in infancy. I remember doing this myself at a young age but grew out of it, so it was seen as harmless at the time.

Casey grew up in quite a comfortable household financially, her father had worked in law enforcement and she had quite an ordinary upbringing apart from a little rivalry with her brother and making up stories. She was popular and well liked as well as being quite a confident child and sociable. Everything more or less looked positive from the outside looking in. Casey would later say that this was not the case and would give a different story of her childhood later on especially in regards to her father and brother.

Casey was quite a bright child and as she grew up she was academically gifted as well as being very active in sports at school. She was a pretty girl and had no problem with attracting the attention of boys at school that she liked, however, the habit of telling lies, even about the silliest of things, had never left her, almost like she had a compulsion to do it. In the beginning the lies were not that serious, it would be about little things but the older she got, the worse they got, including lying to her parents that she was all set to graduate and was taking her education and her future very seriously only for them to find out that she had been going off the rails and had not attending school.

Her parents were not happy about the lying and the situation with Casey not graduating, Being the people that they were (and this becomes clear the more you go into the case), George and Cindy were very much about appearances, they were quite narcissistic and many people believe that this was handed down to their children, in particular, Casey. Instead of accepting that their daughter didn't graduate and looking at other possible options, they decided that they couldn't face the shame of telling the neighbours and everyone they knew that Casey didn't graduate, it was a huge deal for them. So they threw a ridiculous party pretending that Casey did indeed graduate and she went along with it too. It was all one big performance and it was clear to see where Casey had gotten her art of lying from.

It did seem that Casey could do no wrong in her parents eyes and she was able to play on this and manipulate them. They started to notice that she had put some weight on but didn't think anything of it at first and didn't want to say anything incase it upset Casey and they didn't want to make her feel self-conscious about her body. It was starting to be obvious though that the weight that Casey was displaying, was indeed pregnancy weight even though she kept trying to convince her parents that she was still a virgin.

There was a huge amount of denial going on at the time from both Casey and her parents, there seemed to be this attitude of not wanting to acknowledge that she was pregnant but eventually they had to face facts and after much discussion (despite Casey's reservations about becoming a mother at such a young age) Cindy convinced her to keep the baby and that they would support her in any way that they could.

As for the baby's biological father, there's always been a mystery around that with Casey being very vague about it. Despite being a single mother to now, a beautiful little girl whom she named 'Caylee Marie Anthony' (she gave Caylee the same middle name as herself 'Marie'), it didn't effect her love life in any way. She was still a beautiful young woman and had romances with guys who were so besotted with her and adored Caylee. They wanted to bond with both of them but it seemed that Casey was the one who was standoffish. Although she demonstrated on many occasions that she adored her daughter and both she and Caylee could often be seen playing together and hugging each other, there was also this sense of wanting to be young, free, single and out to party sort of vibe that was coming from her. It appeared that the responsibility of being a parent was something that she had a love/hate relationship with. Casey was very lucky because she had her parents there constantly to help her with Caylee. Both George and Cindy were besotted with Caylee and spend almost every single day with her.

Casey was continuing to live with her parents who were helping her everyday with Caylee. She was also in a relationship with a guy that she had been with for quite some time, Jesse Grund and he was convinced that he was Caylee's biological father but after a DNA test revealed that he wasn't. Jesse still wanted to make things work because he adored them both and asked Casey to marry him. The relationship was not to be though as Casey decided to break it off because she felt that Jesse was paying too much attention to Caylee and not enough attention to her which was another demonstration of her narcissistic personality disorder. Cindy was quite happy that the relationship had come to an end because she had grown extremely attached to Caylee and saw Jesse as being in the way. The more you look into this family and their behaviours, they more it just baffles you and leaves you with a 'what the hell was all that about' sort of feeling. To say this family was odd is an understatement and it's hard to keep track (at least, in my experience of researching this case) of what was going on because there's so many lies, twists and turns to this case, it is not a straightforward story.

Cindy appeared to be an overbearing mother and often acted like she was Caylee's mother because she looked after her most of the time. Casey had the habit of picking and choosing when she wanted to be a parent, at times she would be affectionate with Caylee and other times she couldn't be bothered and just wanted to go out shopping or have nights out with friends. It was clear that she wasn't mentally mature enough to be a mother and certainly wasn't maternal (this would also be demonstrated in her behaviour later on). As predicted, Cindy and Casey would often come to blows about Casey's irresponsible behaviour when it came to Caylee. Casey didn't want her mother telling her how to bring her daughter up but at the same time she would keep acting like a teenager with no responsibilities. Arguments in the family home became a regular occurrence and it all came to head one day with Casey walking out the house with Caylee.

The exact circumstances that occurred between Casey and Cindy differs depending on who you believe or want to believe but the next few weeks, Cindy became frantic with worry, missing her granddaughter. When she did get a chance to speak to Casey, she consistently asked where Caylee was and each time there was a different excuse. Casey came up with the infamous and ridiculous lie that Caylee was with a babysitter by the name of Zenaida Fernandez-Gonzalez (nicknamed 'Zanny'). Every time Cindy or someone else asked where Caylee was, Casey gave a story that Caylee was with Zanny.

This went on for weeks and tensions grew more and more between Cindy and Casey with Cindy demanding to know where her granddaughter was, she was tired of the stories about Zanny, she knew her daughter was a practiced liar and maybe it was a grandmother's instinct but she knew that something was wrong.

Whilst all this was going on, Casey was hanging out and partying with friends in nightclubs with Caylee being nowhere to be seen. She was staying over at guys houses, having sex, partying, telling her friends that Caylee was with Zanny. She also told her friends that she worked for Universal Studios as an event planner. In the whole time that she was with these friends, the guy she was seeing and anyone who had witnessed her partying those nights, everyone repeatedly said that she seemed happy, with not a care in the world, no indication in the slightest that anything was wrong.

It's hard to keep up with the lies but everything was unravelling, as well as everything else, George and Cindy discovered that Casey had been lying about working, she didn't even have a job. Casey had been using her brother's car and when her parents were notified that the vehicle had been found at a tow yard, they began to panic. Communication with themselves and Casey had become scarce and they didn't know what was going on, they were worried and they had no idea who this supposed babysitter 'Zanny' was that Casey had previously been telling them about.

George checked out the car and noticed all of the belongings inside, Caylee's car seat and toys were still in there. Why would they be in there? She would need them wouldn't she? As well as wondering why these items that every parent needs for their young child, were still in this abandoned car, there was a strong, overpowering smell coming from the trunk of the car and George (who had worked years as a police officer recognised this smell, it was the smell of decomposition) began to fear the worst. There was also items of rotten food in the car along with other bits of clutter. He was terrified that he was going to find Casey and Caylee in the car deceased, he later said his heart was pounding as he opened the trunk. To his relief, they were not there. He got into the car and drove it home. As soon as he pulled up, Cindy came racing out in a panic and the first thing she noticed was the smell, she even said (kind of a unfortunate choice of words at the time) ''What died?''.

With the state of the car and Caylee still nowhere to be seen, George and Cindy managed to track Casey down to a boyfriend's house and demanded to know where Caylee was. Getting nowhere with Casey, Cindy gets on the phone to the police and tells them she's worried that something has happened to her granddaughter, that she hasn't seen her in weeks, that Casey is constantly giving her excuses and now her son's car has a horrendous odour coming from the trunk. Out of nowhere, Casey comes out with this story that the mysterious babysitter Zanny has kidnapped Caylee and has been missing for just over a month. Cindy and George appeared to be beside themselves.

Casey was questioned about Zanny as she gave more lies about this mysterious woman being Caylee's babysitter for nearly two years. The whole scene was unbelievable, Casey was so unbothered and not acting like a parent who's child had been missing for 31 days. The fact that she had kept this to herself all of this time? To lie to her parents continuously and go out partying with her friends, laughing and joking all the while her little girl is supposed to have been kidnapped.

As investigators sat back and listened to Casey tell lie upon lie upon lie, they knew that this was ridiculous and instructed Casey to take them to her place of employment, Universal Studios. Casey kept the lies up and when they got to the gate she couldn't get in, she didn't have a security pass obviously and just told the police that she forgot her work ID. The staff at the gate who were used to seeing hundreds, maybe thousands of people everyday, recognised that she was with the police (even though they didn't have a clue who she was) and decided to let everyone in. Even inside the studios she still pretended that she worked there until finally she hit a brick wall and told the cops she didn't work there after all. What did she expect them to do? Take her word for it? She really thought she was a convincing liar. In fact, at her trial, a former friend mentioned that Casey once bragged ''I'm such a great liar''.

Investigators grew tired of her lies and were highly suspicious of her from the get-go, she was remanded in custody. Her parents came to visit her some time after and they tried to get some proper information out of her because as far as they knew, Caylee was just missing. Casey is still keeping up this performance that Caylee has been kidnapped by the mysterious babysitter who's phone number no longer works anymore funnily enough. Her whole demeanour during her parents visiting her was that of a couldn't care less attitude, Casey was always 100% concerned with herself and that's all she ever cared about was herself and that was true of her from her childhood, right up to the moment she sat in that courtroom not even shedding a tear until they began talking about her supposed hard times during her childhood.

At this point in time despite everyones suspicions towards Casey, a massive search for Caylee was underway. Information posters were everywhere with Caylee's cute little face on, T-shirts were printed etc, everyone was trying so hard to find her. Despite the massive search for Caylee, Casey still seemed to be so concerned with herself and wasn't sitting glued to the news or demanding to know the latest updates on the search which is what you would expect a frantic parent to be doing. Instead she remained her usual unbothered self but something she said to her parents whilst they were visiting her, spoke volumes and gave chills down the spine. She was talking about Caylee and she said the words ''Caylee was so lucky to have had you''

To be talking about Caylee in the past tense coupled with everything else that had gone on, the ridiculous lies, taking the police to Universal Studios and then admitting she didn't work there, acting care-free despite her daughter supposedly being kidnapped. Her whole behaviour was not one of a terrified parent worried about their missing child.

With the search for Caylee growing and media attention now on the Anthony family, Cindy and George began to suffer abuse from members of the public who believed (even though no body had been found at that time) that Casey had murdered Caylee.

Despite the dreaded fear that Caylee was no longer alive, everyone did hope that there would be a positive outcome to all of this and that by some miracle she would be found safe and well but it wasn't to be. In August of 2008, a maintenance worker by the name of Roy Kronk had contacted the police on three separate occasions stating that he had seen what he thought was a human skull. There was a bit of back and forth between Roy and the police until eventually they discovered the rest of what looked like a child's remains in a trash bag. The skull had bits of hair, tissue and duct tape still attached to it, it was clear that this child (who was sadly, later identified as Caylee) had their mouth and nose taped up, in fact the duct tape had been wrapped around the head of this child. In my opinion this was done to suffocate Caylee.

On the 19th of December 2008 after more remains were found and positively identified to belong to Caylee Anthony, the medical examiner was able to conclude that Caylee had died from homicide but her death was listed as undetermined. There were high traces of chloroform found during the examination but due to the advanced stages of decomposition there was no way they would be able to determine what caused her death.

As you can imagine, as soon as the news was revealed that Caylee's remains had been found, Cindy and George were devastated as was the rest of the family and members of the public. Casey was still not up or down about it and her coldness spoke volumes about who she really was. George found life difficult at this time, unable to cope with the grief, he tried to take his own life and had a left a five page suicide note. Luckily he survived but the grief for him, Cindy and Lee continued.

Not only did they have to cope with the horrendous death of their granddaughter and niece, they now had to face a public trial with Casey and found themselves getting the finger of the blame.

Casey's lawyer was a force to reckoned with despite working on behalf of her, he really did try to paint her in a certain light and he succeeded because Casey Anthony is a free woman. Casey's team had thrown everything they could at the Jury until something stuck. Yet another story emerged of the death of Caylee being in fact, George's fault. They claimed that Caylee had drowned in the family pool and George helped Casey cover it up. Another story was that Casey was now saying that George had sexually assaulted her as a child and that Caylee had died as a result of drowning. Casey and her team claimed that George killed Caylee to stop her speaking out about sexual abuse. Casey also told the court that her father abused her when she was a child and she suspected that he had been abusing Caylee.

So despite praising her father during one of his prison visits and never saying a thing up until this point, she was now claiming to be a victim of George and that she only lied because that is how George ran the family home. George refuted Casey's claims and sat shocked and in disbelief as he heard her team talk about sexual abuse as well as the claim that George had either drowned Caylee or that Caylee died as an accident from drowning and that he helped cover it up.

Casey Anthony's trial was broadcast to the nation and beyond, a lot of people believed that the Judge was going to throw the book at her. That's not what happened sadly, she was let go because they couldn't prove if she was responsible or not, they knew she lied and she had spent some time in prison leading up to this moment so they just classed it as time served.

Casey has been out of prison now for a very long time and has tried her hand at various things from photography and is supposed to be writing a book about Caylee. In the Double Jeopardy law in America, it means that a person cannot be tried for the same crime twice. Many people believe that Casey Anthony got away with murder, what do you think?

For someone who's daughter was murdered or drowned in the family swimming pool, depending on who you want to believe, there's never been an outpouring of grief from her, no emotion. She's not even looking for the supposed proper justice for her daughter, she's not even bothered.

George had strongly denied any inappropriate behaviour towards his children. Casey and George do not speak to each other to this day. Casey is still in touch, briefly, with her mother and her brother. Her relationship with her brother is still a tense one as she had told a few stories about him in the past, whether or not these stories were true, one can only wonder especially with Casey's track record for lying.

In September of 2024, the New York Post reported that Casey Anthony was reportedly in a relationship with a married man of two children. Apparently the man had become infatuated with Casey and had always been attracted to her, telling relatives that she had an ''attractive aura''. The man left his wife and children to be with Casey. It's not the first time we've seen a situation where a guy (for whatever reason, life crisis, bored with married life, tired of being single...who know's the reason) will become fixated on someone who has been in the public eye for all the wrong reasons. If you are a long-time reader of my blog you will remember the Tracie Andrews Case where she abused and murdered her boyfriend and then tried to cover it up by saying his death was the result of a road-rage incident. Well, she ended up marrying a male fan who'd become fixated on her and he left his wife for her. It seems that serial killers are not the only ones who have groupies, for some reason these men are attracted to unstable and dangerous women. I think it's a sexual interest, a turn-on for them to be with someone that they are not supposed to be with. What are your thoughts about this?

It's clear that no matter where Casey Anthony goes or whatever she does, there's always some sort of drama around or behind her, there are always people left hurt as a result of her actions.
