He Was Obsessed With Bratz Dolls....Then He Decided He Wanted A Real One Of His Own.

(Terence Darrell Kelly. Picture credit: The Guardian)

*Please be aware that some of the details shared in this post will be quite disturbing. I have aimed, as always, to be as sensitive as I can be with the details whilst not taking away from the facts of the case. If you would like to discuss this post or any of the other cases that I have covered on this blog, please feel free to email me at jocaledoniankitty@gmail.com*

Isn't it crazy how social media has become such an every day thing in our lives? Even old school people who tried to avoid being a part of it had to join in eventually. I get the latest news from X (Twitter - I still call it Twitter) and literally everyone that I know has some form of social apps on their phone. Everyone seems to have Facebook, even the ones that hate it. Some people have Facebook but never use it and prefer being on another social platform. Everyone has their favourites and for me, it's X/Twitter. So being online over the years, you don't need me to tell you that there is quite a few people on these platforms that are 'a few sandwiches short of a picnic basket' shall we say.

All jokes aside, you get your usual perverts (and that's scary enough....I don't even want to tell you some of the horrific things I have seen and heard, the most unbelievable and strangest sexual fetishes right through to so many monstrosities that I won't even mention, you get the drift).

You get your harmless oddballs and your potentially dangerous oddballs and sometimes it is difficult to decipher who's harmless and who isn't. Step forward a Mr Terence Kelly from the beautiful country of Australia (I've written a few cases out of Australia lately, go check them out if you haven't already done so), who shocked, not just Australia but the rest of the world when it was revealed that he had abducted a 4 year old girl from a campsite. That just there is terrifying enough but we thank the lord that the little girl known as Cleo Smith, was found alive after being held captive by Terrence for 18 days. The monster even followed the girl's family on social media and watched as they frantically searched and appealed for information, knowing full well that he had taken this poor child from her devastated family.

The fact this beautiful child was found and returned safely into the arms of her family, was such a miracle and a blessing because we all know how horrific these types of situations can go. I've written about a number of cases involving child abduction and murder, and it never gets easier, it always haunts me. 18 days with this utterly strange individual and it must have been terrifying. In a strange place with a strange man and far away from your parents, it must have been such a fright for little Cleo but she was such a tough little thing, she endured it and powered through. She was a lot stronger than most adults and I'm so glad that she was found.

Terence Kelly's home demonstrated that the guy's state of mental health was way worse than anyone thought. After a thorough search of his home and online activities they found that Terence, who was in his 30's, was completely obsessed with Bratz Dolls! So much so that he had shelves full of them as well as stacks of merchandise. Bratz is a well known cartoon which is based on young girls who love fashion and glamour. The cartoon is aimed at young girls, not adults. Some adult women like to wear Bratz merch like t-shirts or dress up like them for Halloween but it's pretty much a child's cartoon and designed just to be for fun. For some odd reason Terence was obsessed beyond belief, he would wear Bratz T-shirts and take the dolls out with him in his car. He would talk to them, brush their hair, change their outfits and take selfies with them. He said that he loved hanging out with them at home. He actually made videos online of himself with the dolls.

I'm sure some people would have thought that the guy had issues and was harmless, but to me it just looks like red flags all over the place. What have I always said with these types of individuals, they start with the fantasies and then they want the real thing. For Terence, it was the cartoon, then he had to have the dolls and then he wanted his own real life doll so he snatched a terrified child away from her family. It was an evil and selfish act to have done such a thing as well as stalking her family as they searched for Cleo.

Again, I'm just thankful that Cleo was found and hopefully has been able to take steps to move on with her life.

A lot of people go through difficult childhoods and they don't go on to kidnap children. Terence did have a traumatic childhood and suffered a lot of physical and psychological abuse. It is believed that he created a fantasy life for himself (as abused children often do) as an attempt at coping with the difficulties in his life. He became fixated on cartoons and being so lonely and isolated, he felt that these cartoons were his friends. He was removed from his parents home at a young age and placed with another relative, his great-aunt. When she passed away, his feelings of isolation and loneliness just got worse. He was even more fixated on cartoons, toys and Bratz dolls as if he was trying to compensate for the childhood that was taken from him.

Terence pleaded guilty to Cleo's abduction and was sentenced to 13 years and 6 months (he maybe eligible for parole after 11 years and 6 months). He did try to appeal this sentence but this was dismissed. He is currently serving his sentence at maximum-security prison known as Casuarina in Perth (Western Australia).

This was another shocking case but thankfully one that ended on a positive note with Cleo being found. I do hope that Terence is able to receive the proper psychiatric help that he needs. With such a difficult upbringing, another bizarre fact about this story is that Terence is probably better off in a facility where he can be able to work through his trauma and difficulties. The Mother of All Evil: She Sold Her 6 Year Old Daughter To A Stranger For £800 (He Said He Was A 'Healer' Who Wanted Her Daughter's Eyes & Skin)

*Please be aware that there will be some details in this post that are quite disturbing. I have aimed to be as a sensitive as I can be with the details without taking away from the facts of the case. If you have any questions about this post or would like to speak to me for whatever reason about it, please feel free to email me at jocaledoniankitty@gmail.com*

I've said it before in previous cases that I have covered on this blog over the years, that some people just do not deserve the gift of children and having the privilege of being a parent. 35 year old Kelly Smith (real name Racquel 'Kelly' Smith) is one such person who unfortunately was given the role of a 'Mother' but was in no way ever what you would call 'maternal'. In fact, she saw her beautiful three children as a stone around her neck and love and affection was off the cards as far as she was concerned.

Kelly lived with her three children in what can only be described as a dilapidated hut in Saldanha Bay which is a little place near Cape Town, South Africa, that has seen better days. A chronic drug addict from her early teens, it sadly was no rare thing to hear of Kelly trying to sell her own children to various people in order to get money for drugs. As you can imagine, the children had a hell of a life with her.

(Joshlin Smith. Picture credit: BBC News)

I saw a news article pop up the other day regarding this case and I could not believe what I was reading. This case has shocked South Africa to it's core as well as the rest of the world who are aware of it. I was and am absolutely horrified to think that a mother could do such things to her own children, no matter the circumstances, living in poverty, dependent on illegal substances or whatever the situation, children should not be subjected to this type of horrendous abuse and neglect.

I was horrified to read that Kelly had sold her 6 year old angelic looking daughter, Joshlin to a man who claimed to be a 'healer'. This stranger wanted to buy Joshlin for her skin and eyes which is unbelievable and without batting an eyelid, Kelly (with the help of her disgusting boyfriend and his friend) handed over her innocent little girl to this fiend for the pathetic sum of £800. The evil trio then went off to buy drugs. Joshlin hasn't been seen since, nobody knows if this little girl is alive or deceased.

Since February 2024, the good people of South Africa have been keeping Joshlin in their thoughts, many searches have been conducted, information posters shared around and news reports with appeals for information have been broadcast far and wide. Money has also been kindly donated for a reward for any possible details of where she is and the never-ending hope that she will be found safe and well but as time goes on the fear grows more and more. The fact that a man claiming he was some sort of witch doctor purchased a 6 year old child for her eyes and skin leaves a feeling of utter terror at the fact that this child may no longer be alive. I have written about such people before who have abducted and murdered light skinned people so that they can use their organs and bones for food and potions. In certain parts of the world these horrific things go on and these people believe that by consuming a certain individual's remains or wearing their bones or grinding their bones up into a powder for medicines (sorry for the horrible details here) that it gives them some sort of power and healing. Light skin and eyes seems to be well desired by these types and it frightens me at the thought that this beautiful little girl who already had a tough start at life with this monster of a mother, could be subjected to a horrific end which none of us would dare to think about.

(Kelly Smith. Picture credit: BBC News)

I always try to have hope when a child goes missing and I do hope that I am wrong when it comes to Joshlin but there is a terrible feeling about all of this. Two weeks after Joshlin went missing, Kelly and her accomplices were arrested and charged with kidnapping and human trafficking. The local community were horrified and did all they could (and are still doing all they can to this day) to find out what happened to Joshlin and where she could possibly be, but nobody is unrealistic about the situation, they know the outlook is dire.

In May of this year (2025), Kelly, her boyfriend and their accomplice were all sentenced to life in prison for human trafficking and kidnapping. The search for Joshlin is still active and the Western Cape Police Commissioner was quoted as saying that the police and the people of South Africa will not rest until they find out what happened Joshlin. During the eight week trial, Kelly and her two accomplices were reported to have shown no remorse. Kelly's other two children are now living with other relatives and are said to be in a safe and better environment.

It is devastating to believe that there's people out there who would do this to their own children and also people out there who would harm children like this. I just can't get my head around it and I hope and pray that Joshlin is found. I know the outlook is not positive but I do hope and my heart breaks for this little girl. Joshlin has been taken into the hearts of the people of South Africa and beyond. Anyone who has come across this case has nothing but heartfelt sympathy for this little angel who didn't have a chance from the day she was born, having been born into such a hard life with an evil mother. The other children, we can but hope, will be able to have some sort of better chance at life now that they have been rescued and taken away from Kelly.

This is one of those cases that stays with you and I always have difficulties when it comes to writing about children who've been murdered, abducted or their disappearances being a complete mystery. The world can be a dangerous and very cruel place but you expect your parents to love you and keep you safe, this is not always the case for some children. Joshlin and her siblings deserved so much better.

I will be updating this post if any more news becomes available about Joshlin. I'm sure you will agree that we are all keeping her in our thoughts and prayers.

Thank you for taking the time as always to check out my latest post, especially this one as it's quite a difficult one to get through. I hope you will share this post or whatever information and articles on Joshlin that you can find in the off chance that someone, somewhere might possibly recognise her or know something.

Somebody Out There Knows Where Kevin Hicks Is.....And They've Kept It Secret For Nearly 40 Years!

(Kevin Hicks & the area he was last seen. Picture credits: The Sun)

One of the important aspects of writing about true crime for me personally is the fact that not only do people tell me that they have learned about a case through my blog (or learned more about a case they thought they knew a lot about, through my work) but the fact that my writing (along with others in the true crime community) can put a case under the spotlight, especially what is classed as a 'historical case'. I've always said that it doesn't matter if someone has been missing for 10 days or 10 years or 20 years, it is still important and the relatives deserve to know what happened to their loved ones as well as the possibility (because miracles can happen) that the missing person can be found alive and well. Unfortunately we do have occasions where a long lost individual is eventually found but not alive and in a lot of cases, only partial remains are left. Sometimes there's no answers, sometimes we do get answers, nobody can ever predict the outcome of these heartbreaking situations.

Recently I have been looking into some missing persons cases and one that has remained a mystery up to this very day is the sudden disappearance of 16 year old Kevin Hicks. Kevin, who is (I am going to say 'is' because out of respect for Kevin and his family I will not refer to him in the past tense until it is official that, that is the case) from a close family and lived with his mother Terry, father Derek and sister Alexandra, vanished without a trace on the evening of the 2nd of March 1986.

Kevin, who at 16 reminded me of a young Stuart Adamson from the Scottish rock band 'Big Country' (I wonder if anyone ever told him that) was living in an area south of London known as Addiscombe in Croydon at the time of his disappearance. He had a great relationship with his sister Alexandra although they did have the normal squabbles that siblings often have, they got on most of the time and were quite close in age, people would often mistake them for being twins. Kevin took his studies seriously and Alexandra would later joke that she was the rebellious one out of the pair of them, preferring to go out with her friends whereas Kevin would always respect his parent's wishes and complete his homework as soon as he got home from school. He was quite the amateur chef and would often be playing around in the kitchen trying out different dishes and baking cakes.

His parents would help support his love of cooking by helping him out with the ingredients and letting him have the kitchen to himself whenever the mood took him to make something. The night of 2nd of March 1986, which was a Sunday evening, the Hicks children were doing their usual Sunday night routine, organising their stuff for school in the morning. At some point Kevin remembered he needed some eggs for a class and and exam the next day. It was around 8:30 pm and although it was a bit of an annoyance he took just £1 and decided he was going to just nip to the local grocery store which would've taken about 5 minutes.

When he walked out of the door, his family could not have foreseen what was to happen next. Five minutes soon passed...then 10 minutes.....then 30 minutes....then 2 hours, where was Kevin? Thinking there was a logical explanation, Kevin's concerned parents tried to convince themselves that Kevin must've bumped into a friend on the walk to the grocery store and decided to go to their house. This was the days before mobile phones (which we often knock but to be honest, mobile phones have been a real asset in certain true crime cases, sometimes being the key piece of evidence that has solved a particular crime) so there was no way of knowing, all you could do is sit and hope and when time had gotten on then it was time for phone calls to police, friends and neighbours. Kevin and Alexandra's parents always told them that if they didn't have any money for a public call box to always use reverse charge call.

Derek and Terry were growing more and more concerned so Derek headed out in search of his son and found nothing, when the police were informed they're initial response infuriated the Hicks family and quite rightly so. The police claimed that Kevin had not been gone long enough for an alarm to be raised, they also mentioned that he was 16 years old as if that made any difference, 16 years old is still a child. Terry and Derek were ate their wits end making phone calls to other members of their family as well as Kevin's friends in the hope that someone would have information. They also made the daunting task of calling the local hospitals hoping to find an answer but at the same time praying that Kevin hadn't been involved in a terrible accident.

Days turned into weeks, weeks turned into months and Terry would constantly look out the window towards the route that Kevin took that evening, obsessed with the thought that at any minute Kevin could just appear and walk through the door.

With no leads and nothing to go on, the police were finding themselves hitting a brick wall and it wasn't long before the desperation to get some sort of conclusion to the case drove them to start intimidating Kevin's sister Alexandra. The poor girl was trying to get through the constant worry about where her brother was and she was being quizzed constantly by adults who believed she knew more information than she was letting on. Alex was in the same boat as everyone else, she hadn't a clue where Kevin was and spent many a night lying in bed awake worried sick. Terry and Derek were getting more and more desperate that they (obviously not thinking clearly at the time due to all the stress and worry) began hounding Alexandra for some answers.

Kevin's disappearance didn't only shock the Hicks family, it shocked the neighbourhood as well as his school as he was thought of quite highly by his teachers and those who knew him. Kevin wasn't a troubled boy and there were no red flags, signs of anything unusual going on or secret friends to anyone's knowledge. He was just a normal kid and nothing was out of the ordinary before he left that spring night. Searches took place and Alexandra later spoke of how she was upset that she wasn't allowed to take part but being young at the time, I can understand her parents wanting to protect her. I imagine taking part in a search for a missing child to be one of the most difficult and brave things to do, not only is it emotionally and physically exhausting but you don't know what the outcome is going to be. It would have been utterly devastating if Alexandra had stumbled across something she shouldn't have, it could have traumatized her for life.

During the search, Kevin's grandfather found what looked like a pile of black trash bags and everyone was terrified as you can imagine. On further inspection the bags just turned out to be trash and for a brief moment in a never ending cycle of panic and worry, there was a huge sigh of relief. The police had contacted the owners of the grocery store and requested to view the CCTV tapes. The grocery store owners told the police that the cameras were not in operation and merely just for display. They also said that they had seen Kevin come into the store, buy some eggs and then leave without incident. Everything appeared to be normal and nobody was with him.

Soon months turned into years and the police began to get more and more distant and their focus on the case was starting to lack. The Hicks family and their friends never gave up hope and continued to do what they could to keep awareness of Kevin's disappearance in the public eye. Terry and Derek appeared on TV and interviews as well as Crimewatch (a popular TV show which focused on true crime, missing people and unsolved cases).

Then the unbelievable happened....the years turned into decades with still nothing to go on. It' is Kevin's 55th birthday this year and it's been nearly 40 years since he went missing. Terry, sadly never having the answers of what happened to Kevin or where he was, passed away. In an interview Alexandra claimed that she and her father had been counting bouquets of flowers that had been left in tribute to Terry at her funeral. When they returned the next day, they noticed that there was a bouquet of flowers that were not there before. Alexandra believes that they could have possibly been left by Kevin.

Alexandra hangs on to the hope that he is still alive and thinks that he may have ended up in the Navy as a chef as it wasn't as difficult to get into the forces back then as it is now. But would that make sense? to leave your family all of these years with heartbreaking unanswered questions and never-ending worry? Some investigators believe that Kevin was sadly abducted and murdered, there are so many theories out there about what happened to him but it all remains a very sad mystery. Derek sadly passed away leaving Alexandra to take on the heavy task of trying to keep the flame alive for her brother. She refused to declare him deceased after the 10 year mark and has continued to have hope ever since that she will have answers.

With the latest technology, Alexandra has worked hard to take her search for her brother to online apps and forums hoping that someone somewhere will remember something or quite possibly recognise the photograph of Kevin and might know someone at work who looks like him, just anything, any piece of information, no matter how small could do so much.

I have included a list of links below as well as other details if there is anyone out there who has any piece of information, no matter how small. You may have heard someone talk about Kevin who thinks that they might have seen him that night or heard about his whereabouts since. If you feel scared to contact authorities for whatever reason, feel free to message me anonymously and I will pass the information on. Let's hope and pray that Alexandra can get the answers she so desperately needs and we do hope by some miracle that this has a positive ending but being nearly 40 years and the circumstances in which Kevin vanished, in my opinion, it looks like an abduction. I just can't imagine that he would put his family through all of this intentionally and for both of his parents to pass away and there to be no word or contact from him. What are your thoughts? Please leave them below in the comment section or email me in confidence at jocaledoniankitty@gmail.com

Drugged, Tied-Up & Held Captive For 24 Days By A P**dophile......And Her OWN Mother Was Behind It All: The Shocking Story of The Kidnapping of Shannon Matthews

(From left: Craig Meehan. Middle: Karen Matthews. Right: Michael Donovan. Picture credits: The Guardian, BBC)

*Please be aware that I will be talking about disturbing issues in this post to do with child abuse and abduction. As always I will try to be as sensitive as I can be with the facts without taking away from the facts of the case*

This was a case that didn't just shock and outrage the small town of Dewsbury, West Yorkshire (England), the whole of the UK were incensed by this whole twisted nightmare that left your head spinning. Not long after the shocking Madeleine Mcann case was brought to our attention (the sad case of the young child who mysteriously vanished whilst on a holiday with her family...that's a whole huge case in itself which often brings up strong emotions to this very day as well as very tense debates as to what really happened to Madeleine but for this post, the focus is on the Shannon Matthews story), back home in England we had what appeared to be a shocking abduction on English soil.

The location for this heartbreaking situation was a working class area known as 'Dewsbury Moor' in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire. The area had seen better days and like a lot of towns in the UK with the shut down of a lot of local industries, unemployment and crime was rife but the people who lived there did their best to get by. On the 19th of February 2008 the police received a strange phone call from a woman claiming that her daughter had failed to return home from school. Karen Matthews (32) was on the phone telling the operator that her nine year old daughter was missing, her voice sounded strained but there was something to it, almost like she was putting it on a bit. Anyway, the police took the matter very seriously and to their credit they were on the scene in a flash. Everything moved so quickly and then the media were camped up outside of Karen's house where she lived with her younger boyfriend, Craig Meehan (22) and her children.

Karen, despite her frumpy style, unkempt hair and huge bags under her eyes (looked a lot older than her 32 years) never seemed to have much trouble in the boyfriend department although they didn't hang around for very long. She had various children by different fathers and her home was like a 'mad house' according to locals. Despite having young children in the house, Karen and Craig would often have various friends around at the weekends and sometimes on week nights too, drinking, playing loud music, their home seemed to be the local hang-out place for some of the locals. Karen came from a big family and Craig was well known in the area too. Despite the lack of opportunities in the area and the levels of crime, the community was quite close-knit and everyone knew everyone so when it was announced that Shannon was missing, everyone stepped up to support Karen and Craig.

There was a lot of drama at the time because a lot of people from the area felt like the press were trashing them in the newspapers because they were working class. When Madeleine Mcann was reported missing, her parents, who were financially stable Doctors, were treated in a respectful manner and given money and all kinds of support. People noticed a class difference and voiced their concerns.

In the time that followed from Shannon being reported missing, the police and the country went from feeling sympathy for Karen to suspicion to utter hatred by the time the case had come to an earth shattering conclusion.

This case was taken very seriously and it was (to this date in December 2024) known as the second most highly investigated case in West Yorkshire Police's history, right next to the horrific serial killer case of Peter Sutcliffe (The Yorkshire Ripper). Hundreds of police officers were on the case, hours and hours of overtime, hours of searches, endless streams of tax payers money as well as other donations was poured into the search for Shannon. Local volunteers gave up their free time to spend time walking for hours and miles on foot looking for any clues as to where this little girl might be. Posters were everywhere, t-shirts were printed and worn by all of the locals including Karen and Craig. There was no stone left unturned in the search for Shannon.

(Karen Matthews. Picture credit: The Sun)

As the hours turned into days, the news, media and general public were glued to the Matthews story. I remember watching everything unfold on TV and seeing the information posters everywhere, even in supermarket bathrooms. We all hoped and prayed that Shannon would be found safe and well but as time went on we all felt a terrible feeling inside and there was something else that bothered everyone too...Karen's behaviour, there was just something about her that you couldn't put your finger on. Then stories started to spread like wildfire, because the story had been heavily reported on by the newspapers and media, Karen and Craig were treated a bit like celebrities. Just like the disgraceful Philpott parents's Mick and Mairead (who had started a fire in their own house on purpose which resulted in their children's deaths), Karen and Craig were lapping up the attention as well as the 'freebies' that the heartbreaking situation brought. As well as free pizzas, alcohol, clothes etc (by the way, they were still having parties at their house with all of this going on), a trip to the local supermarket was like an episode of 'Supermarket Sweep'. Just like the Philpotts, Karen and Craig were told to fill up a shopping cart with whatever essentials they needed so they took advantage and were back and forth to the supermarket stocking up on everything and eating like Kings and Queens. Such actions left a sour taste in people's mouths especially the police who were growing increasingly concerned by Karen's lack of anxiety towards the fact that her daughter was actually supposed to be missing.

As I mentioned earlier, the sympathy quickly started to run out because Karen and Craig were such terrible actors and just couldn't help letting their masks slip. Watching the pair of them on the TV you had to remind yourself that Shannon was actually missing because they didn't act like it. There was even a segment on the news where they persuaded Karen to make an appeal for information. Well, there was no chance of an Oscar in Karen's future because it was just terrible, she held up a cuddly toy (which wasn't even Shannon's) and in between various words she would do a few sniffles and tried her best to cry. All I can remember is her saying ''Come home, my beautiful princess daughter, please come home'' or words to that effect. Normally in these types of tragic situations, your heart goes out to a parent who's pleading for their child to return home but something was really odd here.

Reporters started knocking on all the doors in the area looking for gossip and juicy stories about Craig and Karen in return for cash. Of course their so-called friends and family members lapped this up and then all of these stories came out that Craig had been violent towards Shannon in the past which he denied. It just wasn't looking good for the pair of them. Lucky for Karen she had a very good friend who (for some reason) stood by her even though she had suspicions herself. Karen's friend Julie was a major factor in this case because she was the one who finally got Karen to tell the truth.

(Craig Meehan. Picture credit: The Sun)

Night after night we all watched the news hoping for a positive update on Shannon, we found out that Shannon had been through a lot in her young life, despite being part of a large family, she was quite isolated and would always be in her room. She was a very quiet and lonely child who was often bullied at school. She'd reportedly written on her bedroom wall that she wanted to go and live with her biological father, Leon Rose.

Suspicion towards Karen and Craig continued to grown until out of nowhere a news report flashed across television screens across West Yorkshire and beyond on the 7th of March 2008, Shannon had been found!!! She was alive and well, it was incredible!!! All of us who had been following the case were overjoyed and for myself I began to think that I had made a mistake in judging Karen because here Shannon was, alive and well and all set to be returned to her family......or was she?

Tongues started to wag when it appeared that Shannon wasn't being returned home, people were puzzled. in the midst of the excitement and celebration everyone noticed that Karen didn't appear to be smiling that much. Once the dust had settled and the realisation that Shannon was ok, the questions began of where the hell was she all that time? The police were keeping quiet in the beginning but there was a very strange and uncomfortable feeling in the air.

It was reported that she had been found at a relative's house which left everyone confused but as more details began to emerge everyone was left feeling sick to their stomachs. The truth of the matter was, Karen had been watching the whole Madeleine Mcann case on TV a year earlier and saw all of the money and attention the McCann family were getting, she came up with a plan with Craig's Uncle, a man named Michael Donovan (who was also a p**dophile) that he take Shannon for a while and they pretend that she'd been abducted so that they could spilt any reward money. The plan was that Michael was going to pretend to be the one who found Shannon. At the time of Shannon's disappearance a reward that was raised totalled £50,000. The plan backfired when a neighbour contacted authorities because they'd heard strange noises coming from his flat even though he lived alone and the noises were happening when he was out of the house.

More disturbing details of what Shannon actually went through in Michael's flat emerged. He had drugged her with various pills and tied her up with a length of rope where she could only reach the bathroom. He would also keep her hidden under a bed. I'm sure you'd agree with me that we don't even want to know what else this poor child went through having being trapped for 24 days with a p**dophile. Karen knew about his history with children, apparently in her own family she was related to 17 p**dophiles and didn't seem to have any issues with having these things around her vulnerable children.

In the safe hands of the authorities, Shannon had a serious of medical tests and psychological tests done. They had found that she had been given various substances for longer than the 24 days, Doctors claimed that Shannon had been given various drugs for at least a period of two years before her abduction. More questions were raised why this poor girl was given a constant cocktail of drugs, what had been going on in that house, the house that she lived in with her mother? Were the other kids fed drugs too? The whole situation was horrendous and just when you thought it couldn't get any worse, the police who had been searching through Karen's house, had been examining Craig's personal computer and found tons of horrific child abuse pictures that were some of the worst that they had ever seen.

It appeared that poor Shannon as well as her siblings, were surrounded by utter filth from start to finish. Their mother was a horrendous woman who knew that she was putting her children at risk and who knows exactly what happened to these poor children.

When the police turned up at Michael Donovan's flat and found Shannon and the circumstances in which she was being held, they couldn't believe their eyes. Michael wasted no time in spilling the beans to the police about Karen's part in the whole thing. Craig claimed that he knew nothing about the plot even though it was his uncle who's flat that Shannon was being drugged and held in. Craig had enough problems of his own since he was outed as a disgusting p**dophile himself. At the station before the whole thing erupted, Karen was brought to the station to confirm that the little girl found in Michael Donovan's flat was indeed Shannon, for a mother who was supposed to be beside herself with worry, she just stood there and confirmed that the girl was indeed Shannon and that was that. She didn't seem to care because she knew all along that Shannon was alive, she knew where she was the whole time. The whole thing had been a sick performance with Shannon being put through hell for the sake of money.

Everyone in the community (even though many had their suspicions) were horrified when they found out the full details of what had actually been going on. Karen, Craig and Michael were now in police custody and Shannon was in care of the authorities with the rest of Karen's children being placed elsewhere. It was clear that she wouldn't be seeing Shannon again or the rest of her children for a very long time. As for her and Craig's relationship? As a last ditch attempt at trying to put on a pathetic display of human decency she claimed that she had dumped Craig and had no idea that he had all of that disgusting material on his computer.

On the 4th of December 2008 both Michael Donovan and Karen Matthews were found guilty of kidnap and false imprisonment. Both were sentenced to eight years in prison. Karen has since been released and Michael died a few years ago of cancer in hospital.

Craig Meehan was sentenced in September of 2008 for only 20 weeks for having child abuse images on his computer. He was never charged as being part of the kidnap plot. Since his release from his short stint in prison, he has reportedly moved house about eight times. He's tried to change his appearance and doesn't wear the glasses or baseball caps but people still recognise him. Every time local residents find out that he's in their town, authorities move him to another location. It's actually shocking to learn that he was back living in Dewsbury close to a school, again he was spotted by the locals and moved elsewhere. His location as of 2024 is unknown, he's probably in Scotland or something but that just me speculating. He seems to have been moved all over the place in West Yorkshire and keeps being recognised so authorities may have decided just to move him out of the country. Isn't it ridiculous that we have struggling families in this country and homeless people who don't have a place to live but scum like Craig Meehan are chauffeured from place to place, they always seem to find homes for these individuals.

Karen has never shown remorse for what she did to her own daughter, in her mind, Shannon was not murdered and her plan was never to have Shannon murdered so it can't be that bad. She is unbelievable and will forever be known as one of Britain's worst mothers. In my opinion the three of them got off lightly, Shannon has to live for the rest of her life with the horrible memories of what they did. She will be aware of what happened and the utter betrayal of her own mother. Shannon (if that is still her name, I imagine maybe her name was changed?) started a new life with a new family after she was well enough to leave care. She continued to receive regular counselling sessions for years as she suffered terribly with nightmares. I hope that she was able to move on in some way with her life and I hope she is out there somewhere feeling loved and happy. We all want the best for her and respect her privacy. As for the rest of Karen's children, I have no idea what happened to them. We can only hope that they moved on to better things too. I have no idea if Karen is in touch with any of her children but I do know that her friend Julie still remained in contact with her during her time in prison and beyond.

Some people may not understand how Julie could remain friends with such a person but from what I have seen of Julie in her interviews, she comes across as a warm, almost counsellor type individual. She's willing to look past what Karen has done and think's that Karen is just mentally ill. Whatever the story is between Karen and Julie that's their business but I don't think the majority of people could ever give Karen Matthews the time of day. There are some things in life that just cannot be forgiven.

If you have made it this far in the post, I thank you so much and appreciate your time. I realise that this is my last post of 2024. I'm taking a break over the Christmas holidays (give my brain and fingers a rest lol) and indulging in all things food, music, movies, close friends/family and fun. It's important not just for myself but for you too, to kick back sometimes and treat yourself to some proper relaxation and as well as celebrating and being thankful for what we have, giving to our loved ones and thinking about the deeper meaning of Christmas which I always do. My grandmother passed away on the 18th of December many years ago so it's a very personal date for me and I always light a candle. I don't look at this time of year as doom and gloom, i love it because my grandmother loved Christmas so much, she would decorate her house and make Christmas dinner, she would make a huge deal every year. I celebrate her life even more at Christmas and I have carried on a lot of her Christmas traditions in tribute to her.

I wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas, if you celebrate and if you don't well all the best for 2025 anyway. Here's to the start of a New Year and new beginnings.

I will see you in the next post....in 2025 x

Finally Solved 27 Years Later! | The Shocking Abduction & Murder of Jacob Wetterling

*Please be aware that I will be sharing some sensitive information in this post regarding child abduction, sexual assault and murder. I have tried to be as gentle and sensitive as I can be whilst not taking away from the facts of the case. If anyone has any questions or enquiries, please feel free to reach out to me via my email or the contact form here on my page. Thank you*

I can't believe it has been 6 weeks since I started writing this series about Unsolved Cases over the decades and here we are in the final instalment. Obviously I will be continuing to feature more unsolved cases in future posts but for this series it has come to a close...for now. Next week I will be focusing on a different type of true crime case so I hope you will continue to join me for that? If you are new to my blog, I post new content here every Sunday!

So, first of all I would like to thank everyone who has commented about the cases covered in this series and the emails I have received. It was interesting to read that so many of you are personally familiar with these cases and were there first hand when the heartbreaking news first broke. I appreciate all the messages and emails received about the posts, it's a highlight of my day when a regular reader contacts me or someone has just discovered my blog and has kindly taken the time to communicate with me. I always find it fascinating when someone shares their memories of reading about a particular case in the newspapers or perhaps knew a victim or the perpetrator(s). People tell me they learn a lot from my posts but I also learn a lot from them too.

In this post, I will be sharing the heartbreaking story of the beautiful little boy, Jacob Erwin Wetterling who, at the age of just 11 years old, was abducted and his case remained unsolved for an unbelievable 27 years!

Jacob was born into a loving family in Minnesota, USA to doting parents, Patty and Jerry on the 17th of February 1978. He also had two sisters and a brother. he was brought up in a happy household and his parents often allowed Jacob and his brother to play outside on their bikes. The boys were always well behaved and knew not to talk to strangers.

Jacob was like a lot of 11 year old boys of his age, he enjoyed playing outside on his bike, watching movies and one of his favourite things to do was ride to the video store to pick up movies. On the 22nd of October 1989 it was a Sunday and Jacob's parents were out at a dinner party while the children remained at home. It wasn't unusual back then for parents to leave their children home for a short period of time, the children had a phone number to call their parents in case of emergency. At around 9pm that evening, Jacob reportedly contacted his parents asking for their permission for he, his siblings and a a friend to ride their bikes to the local video store to rent out some movies. Jacob's parents were not to keen on the idea and didn't feel comfortable with the children being out at night.

Jacob didn't give up though and contacted them again saying that they would wear reflective clothing and they would leave his younger sister with a trusted neighbour next door. Eventually the parents agreed as long as the boys came straight home. The boys agreed to their parents wishes and Jacob, his brother and friend (a boy by the name of Aaron) set off for the video store.

Whilst at the video store, the boys excitedly browsed the aisles with so many movies to choose from. Video stores were so exciting and very much a highlight of the week for many people who fancied a night in with movies and some homemade popcorn. The boys decided on renting out the classic 'The Naked Gun'. When the three of them left the store, expecting to enjoy the rest of their evening cosy in front of the TV watching the movie and eating snacks, what happened next nobody could have foreseen.

Out of nowhere a man appeared with a gun, ordering the three terrified young boys to get down on the ground and reveal their ages. Jacob's brother was ordered to run away and not look back or he would be killed. Without hesitation and full of fear, the frightened 10 year old boy ran for his life, never to look back. As soon as he got home he raised the alarm for help. Jacob and his friend Aaron were still on the ground, the gun pointing at their backs until the man holding the gun ordered them to turn around so that he could see what they looked like.

The sick and evil man decided that he liked the look of Jacob the best so he ordered Aaron to leave. Aaron who was just a young child himself, in fear for his life, had no choice but to leave his friend behind. It was a very traumatic experience to have had to go through for all three of the boys but for Jacob, the ordeal wasn't to end there. The monster holding the gun stole the 11 year old boy away from his family, friends and all who loved him on that horrific night.

Nobody wasted any time in searching for Jacob, authorities were contacted straight away, search helicopters flew overhead, police cars were on the streets as well as officers on foot, along with family members, friends and the local community were all out looking for Jacob. It was all sadly to no avail, not a trace of him was found and despite the constant incredible efforts by those who knew him, the questions would remain unanswered for 27 years.

The heartbreaking fact that this case was left up in the air for so long is very difficult to take in. The police actually questioned and took DNA samples from a known child abuser/killer by the name of Danny Heinrich. Despite having his DNA on file just months after Jacob's abduction, forensics were not as advanced as they are today and so the case remained cold until a blogger who had seen Jacob's mother on TV taking about the case, became involved. This is another remarkable thing about the true crime community, sometimes a huge difference can be made to cases that are sadly, left on the files.

Due to this blogger's dedication to the case, The police focused their attention back on Danny Heinrich who they knew was a monster when it came to children, but at that time the case that they were trying to nail him on had reached past the point of statute of limitations. Investigators didn't give up though, determined to get him and the DNA was tested and sure enough there was a match. Danny Heinrich was facing a sickening catalogue of charges and was offered a plea deal in exchange for information about Jacob and the location of his remains. The monster agreed to this and revealed the horrendous truth about what happened that night back in 1989.

Danny Heinrich confessed that he had abducted Jacob Wetterling and drove the poor child to a gravel pit where he was subjected to being handcuffed before being physically and sexually assaulted. After this horrendous ordeal, Jacob was murdered by gunshot and buried. Then for 27 years his loved ones as well as Aaron (his friend who escaped that night) had to live with the constant pain of never knowing what had happened to Jacob and who was responsible.

As part of his plea deal, Danny Heinrich agreed to take investigators to the burial site where Jacob's remains had been left undiscovered for 27 years. Sure enough, Jacob's remains were there and it was heartbreaking to see the shirt that Jacob had been wearing that night, all ragged. As was to be expected after such a long time, Jacob had to be identified by his dental records. It was confirmed to be him.

(Danny Hienrich. Picture Credit: TwinCities)

Danny Heinrich was sentenced to 20 years for child p*rnography as part of the plea deal he couldn't be done for Jacob's murder. Everyone knew what a danger this guy was to children, an absolute sick monster who should never see the light of day. Heinrich was sentenced in 2016 and claims to be 'truly sorry' for his crimes.

One of Danny Heinrich's victim's who thankfully survived his horrendous ordeal at this evil man, was awarded a considerable amount of damages for the absolute hell that he and his family went through. This brave survivor was sexually assaulted by Heinrich just months before he abducted, r*aped and murdered Jacob. Henrich didn't face proper justice for this crime or for Jacob because of the plea deal.

Danny Heinrich is now 61 years old and is rotting in prison, hopefully suffering and never to have the luxury of walking the streets again. A lot of mistakes were made so many years ago which allowed this monster to slip through the fingers of investigators and he was then able to carry on his sickening acts to the point of murder.

Jacob's amazing parents continued to honour their beloved son by helping set up a law in his name 'The Jacob Wetterling Act'. The purpose of the act that came into US law in 1994 was for a register that recorded all known sex offenders to be documented, monitored and for the general public to be kept safe and informed of any possible danger in their local area. The register also helps investigators with future crimes, abduction searches and possible links to other missing child cases. If a child goes missing in a particular area, anyone who is on that register near to that vicinity will be focused on straight away and the public will be notified.

Jacob was finally laid to rest at Saint John's Abbey Friends Cemetery in Minnesota. There is a beautiful online memorial page for Jacob which you can view and lay virtual flowers & messages here.

Please check out the Jacob Erwin Wetterling Resource Center online here.

RIP Jacob, your beautiful legacy will forever continue through your loved ones, your incredible parents, those who were lucky enough to have known you, the incredible changes your loved ones have brought into the world in your name in order to help others, and to complete strangers like me who have been affected and moved reading your story and who I shall always remember as I do about all of the children and cases I have written about.

Unsolved Cases Part 5: ''We Know It's Not Going To Be Good, We Would Like Some Answers?'' | Possible Suspect?, People Staying Silent, Bohemian Grove & Satanic Rituals? What REALLY Happened To Kevin A Collins?

(Collage created by the blog author. Picture credits: sfgate, people, helpfindmissingkevinandrewcollins)

*Please be aware that I will be covering some sensitive details in this post to do with child abduction and satanic rituals. As always I have tried to be as sensitive as I can with the details without taking away from the facts of the case. Please feel free to contact me by email if you have any questions or issues*

Kevin Andrew Collins might not be a name that jumps out at you when you first hear it but I bet you recognise the face?, I'm sure you've asked yourself ''where have I seen this little boy before?''. Well, 10 year old (the age he was back in 1984) Kevin unfortunately earned the title as the first missing child who's picture was placed on milk cartons across the United States. The missing poster of this beautiful little boy became somewhat iconic in a heartbreaking way. His poster was everywhere and even featured in scenes in classic movies such as 'The Terminator' and 'A Nightmare on Elm Street'.

Before the days of the internet this was how appeals and searches were done. These methods are still used but thanks to the internet, advances in forensic technology, AMBER Alerts and mobile phones, we are able to do a lot more nowadays than we could before and we are able to reach more people on a much bigger scale. Despite the lack of resources available in 1984 and in the first stages of the case (where the police were not as helpful as they could have been), Kevin's family did all that they could and literally walked the streets putting posters up everywhere, doing TV appeals, radio appeals, newspapers columns dedicated to Kevin were published and for the first time in American history, his picture and information was to be placed on milk cartons up and down the country.

(Kevin Andrew Collins. Picture credit: helpfindmissingkevinandrewcollins)

Kevin was known as the first of the 'Milk Carton Kids' and as heartbreaking as this is, I believe the idea to include these appeals on milk cartons to have been a genius idea. Despite all of the trouble that Kevin's family had gone to, the public's support and the change of tune by the police who were now taking the matter more seriously, the whereabouts of Kevin were still unknown. That was over 40 years ago and today (2024 as I write this) we are no closer to knowing the truth of what happened to Kevin.

With unsolved cases that have gone on for decades and in particular with missing cases, there is a tendency for some people's minds to run riot. People want answers and they want to be the ones who can solve the case. It is sad and disrespectful and to be honest I've seen a lot of disrespect when it comes to this case. It's insulting to the family of Kevin and Kevin himself that some people have been spreading wild stories about child sacrifice at Bohemian Grove of which they are claiming (by a so-called 'confidential source' that most probably doesn't exist) Kevin was a victim. Another strange man on YouTube (who's trying to sell his self-published books by the look of it) is pointing the finger at Kevin's mother and basically saying she is responsible for Kevin vanishing despite having not a shred of evidence or fact. When it comes to conspiracy theories, I listen to what people have to say, I'm interested and I admit that there are times when what they have said has actually turned out to be the case or an event they predicted eventually happened, I am open minded. But when it comes to a missing child and a devastated family who's grieving and has had decades of never-ending pain, it is just vile to make up fantasy stories.

Bohemian Grove is shrouded in mystery and it's a private club which is very secretive and the members are often people in the highest echelons of society, people with serious money and power. The group of men get together and what they get up to, nobody knows and it intrigues me but that's a whole different rabbit hole and a possible future post? There's a lot of things that I think actually go on (as I said before, I am a free-thinker) but I think that connecting Kevin to Bohemian Grove is in poor taste. I'm sure you would agree with me when I say, facts and evidence are very important and more important that just a rumour, a theory. If this so called witness (I watched a guy being interviewed and his eyes were darting about all over the place) actually viewed (as he claimed) Kevin being murdered at Bohemian Grove then why didn't he stop it? I'm sure if any of us saw a child being harmed we would do something about it there and then, police would be contacted etc.

Kevin was quite a shy boy and he was a very well behaved child, the sort of boy that you would dream of having as a son. He was born in San Francisco on January the 24th 1974, one of nine children, to doting parents Ann and David. Kevin struggled with dyslexia at school but despite this he gave his school work his all. He was quite a sociable child and loved to take part in sports, particularly basketball of which he attended regular practice like clockwork. He'd often attend basketball practice with his brother but on that particular day he went missing his brother was ill so, as determined as he was to never miss a session, he attended on his own. The session didn't end until just after 7pm on that chilly February evening of the 10th which for a 10 year old boy to travel back on his own would nowadays raise eyebrows but back then it was seen as normal. Kevin walked to the bus stop and patiently waited to make his journey home back to the safety of his family. Instead sadly Kevin never made it home, it was like he vanished into thin air, never to be seen or heard from again.

Kevin was not the type of child to just run off, there was no problems at home, he was a happy child but he was a very trusting child too and would happily talk to anyone. Witnesses have claimed that he was seen talking to a man with a black dog, other witnesses have said that he was seen talking to two white men with a car. Nothing else has been reported since but the case was reopened again in 2013 when a decision was made to start looking back into historical cases which many have now been thankfully solved due to advances in forensics. We are sadly no closer to learning the truth of what happened to Kevin but his family have never given up although they do believe that the reality of the situation is that Kevin may no longer be with us. They just want answers, they want to know what really happened to him. His mother Ann has previously said that in one way she wants to know what happened and for his possible remains to be found for some sort of closure but on the other hand knowing the truth, discovery of remains would also be devastating because then that is the final chapter in this heartbreaking story and the hope of ever finding him alive completely gone.

Speculation continues about what possibly could have happened to Kevin, I've mentioned the extreme theories and false accusations but could he have been abducted by the two men in the car? Could he have been abducted and brought up by another family as we have seen in previous cases? Kevin would be 50 years old today (at time of writing in 2024) if he had been abducted by a family you would have thought that at some point the truth would have revealed itself by now?

I, like a lot of people including yourself as you read this, have some ideas and I'm sad to say but I have to be honest, it looks to me (and this is just my opinion) that Kevin may have been abducted and murdered. There was a 'Person of Interest' that the police had their eye on and he was a known child abuser who went by various aliases. As I mentioned previously, witnesses claimed to have seen Kevin talking to a man with a black dog, this suspect (real name Dan Therrien who was going by the name 'Wayne Jackson' at the time) was local to the area that Kevin went missing and also had a black dog. Dan was a sick monster who preyed on children as young as 7 years old, he had a history of horrendous crimes towards children. Despite him looking more and more like a suspect he was never arrested and the police basically let him slip through their fingers. They remained focused on him at the time and even searched his home where they found bones which turned out to have belonged to an animal.

Despite the case being re-opened and investigators going back over the facts and looking at Dan Therrien again, it was sadly to no avail because Dan passed away leaving many questions unanswered. Investigators have been trying for years to get information out of a close friend of his who so far is saying nothing, they want to know anyone who could have possibly been around Dan back in 1984 and the following years incase they hold the key to vital information.

(Ian Therrien. Picture credit: nbcnews)

As well as having to deal with not knowing what happened to Kevin, the malicious theories and the lack of media attention nowadays to this case, the family have had to deal with people pretending to be Kevin and attempting to contact them. It is a very sick world that we live in at times.

After Kevin's disappearance, the family tirelessly looked for him and the stress became too much for his parents marriage, they sadly divorced and although his mother Ann remained in the area, his father moved out of the country.

On the 10th anniversary of Kevin's disappearance, a decision was made to install a tribute bench to him at the Holy Cross cemetery in Colma, California. The bench includes the inscription: 'Forever in our hearts - Kevin Andrew Collins'.

There's always a real sadness that comes over me when I think of this case and similar cases. I've mentioned before that although I study and write about a lot of different crime stories, when it is something to do with children I always find it particularly heartbreaking. I do hope that one day soon a miracle will happen and the family of Kevin Andrew Collins will get some answers we must also never give up on hope no matter how bleak the outcome may appear, there has been times when surprises have happened.

When he was last seen, Kevin was 4'6, had brown hair and weighed around 70 lbs. His eyes are described as grey/green. He was wearing a school uniform, dark brown cord trousers. A white short sleeved shirt, a dark green sweater and a Giants jacket.

If you have any information or may know someone who does, no matter how small please contact the San Francisco Police Department on 415 553 1071 (quoting case number: 840167303)
