The Black Cab Rapist: John Worboys | True Crime

(John Worboys aka John Derek Radford. Picture credit: bbc.co.uk)

A lot of us rely on black cabs to take us to and from places especially if we've had a night out and had something to drink or if we've decided to leave the car at home because driving in a big city like London can be stressful. On the whole, black cabs are reliable, safe and thousands of people rely on them everyday and night. But from the summer of 2002 to late 2007, someone took what was a heavily relied upon and trusted service and used it to carry out his twisted, sick and depraved acts on defenceless women.

I'm talking of course about John Worboys (or as he likes to call himself these days John Derek Radford) otherwise known as ''The Black Cab Rapist''. John didn't murder anyone to our knowledge (thank goodness) but he still carried out a series of disgusting crimes which went undetected for over 5 years.

Let me take you back a little bit to John's background to give you an idea of who he is. Before I begin, don't forget to follow me on Instagram at @KittysOnTheCase for my mini true crime blogs and check out my donations page incase you would like to buy me a coffee if you enjoy my content or would like to sign up for extra features and access to my personal blogs. I also have to add in here that some of the details shared in this post are quite disturbing.

Ok, so John Worboys was born in Enfield, England in June of 1975. Not much is known about his childhood other than he left school with hardly any qualifications and took odd jobs working as a milkman, security guard and a dairy manager.

He was always someone who craved female attention and people who knew him described him as ''the perfect gentleman''. John was not a confrontational person, he was quite laid back and would open doors for ladies and give up his seat for them to sit down. He was of average appearance but some women would say he was attractive. It was his cheeky chappy personality that mostly attracted women to him, he could be the gentleman but tell a few jokes too.

When he was 30 he decided that he wanted to become a stripper and surprisingly he managed to make a successful career out of it for a short while. He wasn't your stereotypical stripper, he was slightly overweight and was more of a comedy act. He called himself ''The Minder'' after the character in the 80s UK TV series. He'd arrive dressed up as an old man before stripping off and making the women laugh with his terrible dancing and jokes.

John would make £1000 a week as a stripper and enjoyed the attention that it gave him. He would be at hen nights and birthday parties where a lot of the women had quite a bit to drink. John had a lot of one night stands with some of the women that attended these parties. He realised that he had more of a chance with women if they were drunk.

In 1991, John got married and the career as a stripper began to dry up and his attempt at a porn career had failed. He'd gotten more older looking and put on more weight and wasn't getting any bookings. By 1996 his marriage had broken down due to violence and his ex wife accused him of sexually assaulting her teenage daughter.

Not long after this time, John went on a date with a woman and she later said in interviews that he was the perfect gentleman on the first date and she admitted that she had slept with him. She felt that John had connected with her and because he was so nice with her, she went further with him which she said she would not normally do.

A little while after that John invited her to his place for a second date, he had bottles of wine ready and cooked her a delicious meal, she was really impressed. Not being a big drinker, she sipped her first glass of wine slowly but noticed as she was half way through the drink that she was feeling nauseous.

The next thing she remembers is waking up the next day, naked in John Worboys's bed feeling dreadful and wondering what had happened. She asked him and he laughed and told her that she had been drunk but she didn't buy it, she knew something wasn't right. She wasn't a big drinker and there's no way she would have gotten so drunk that she passed out and gotten to the point that she didn't remember where she was or what she was doing.

The lady went home on the bus feeling dirty, humiliated and angry. She felt that something terrible had happened, that he had spiked her drink but there was no way for her to prove it and what would she tell the police? Would they believe her? She decided not to take the matter further.

Having a failed marriage behind him, his days being a stripper and getting female attention now over, he came up with a plan that would give him access to vulnerable women regularly. He decided to begin a career as a black cab driver in London.

John had it all planned out that he would keep a bag in the front of his cab which was filled with bottles of alcohol, soft drinks, condoms, sex toys, plastic cups, Temazepam tablets (prescribed for sleeping problems but have been known to be used as a date-rape drug) as well as other over the counter medications. He also had a bundle of cash.

His plan was to pick up women who were a bit tipsy after a night out and once they were in the cab he would ask them straight away their address (because he knew that they wouldn't be able to give him the address properly later as the drugs would've taken effect by then) and then tell them how pretty they were or how they seemed like a nice girl. He would tell the women that he had won the lottery and was upset that he had nobody to celebrate it with. He would pull out the stack of notes and show it to the women as if it was some kind of proof.

He would stop the cab and ask the women to have a quick drink with him and he'd pass them a plastic cup filled with wine or a soft drink. Not all the girls agreed to have a drink but some who felt sorry for him or were feeling tired or a bit worse for wear, accepted the drink.

A few minutes later the women would start to feel light headed and this is when John Worboys would get into the back of the cab. Some of the victims only remember getting into the cab, others remember him getting into the back beside them.

From the summer of 2002, John Worboys drove his black cab across London, picking up unsuspecting victims, sexually assaulting them and getting away with it because the women had no memory or proof of what had happened and some felt too embarrassed to go to the police.

One of the victims later spoke of her trauma at the hands of John Worboys, she'd been out with some friends but hadn't drank any alcohol. When she got into his cab, she remembered him handing her a soft drink from a can that had been opened. She also mentioned that he'd told her he'd won the lottery. The next thing she remembers is feeling dizzy and John Worboys stopping the cab somewhere and getting into the back. She woke up at 2pm the next day feeling dreadful with a pile of voicemails from work colleagues wondering where she was.

Unbeknown to this lady, John Worboys had let himself into her flat and woke up her boyfriend. He told him that she was drunk and could he come and get her out of the cab. She said that she can't be sure if she was assaulted or not as she can barely remember anything of that night but she did notice that she woke up with her tights and boots on. She also noticed that whatever drugs John had given her, she had had a reaction to and actually wet herself in the backseat. She believes this is what saved her from being raped.

Unfortunately like many of the other victims, she felt that she couldn't go to the police.

In another incident, John drove one of his victims to the police station claiming that she was drunk.

Towards the end of 2007, 2 girls had gotten into the back of John's cab. This time his plan didn't go the way he expected. After he dropped the first girl off, he asked the second girl to repeat her address and told her he'd won the lottery and offered her a drink.

This girl was a virgin and after a couple of sips of the drink she began to feel the effects of the drugs but for some reason she kept passing in and out and remembers flash backs to John Worboys being on top of her.

She woke up the next day ill and remembered the flashbacks and knew something had really happened because she felt sore on certain parts of her body. John had the nerve to go to her house the next day and post an envelope containing money through her letterbox. The girl went to the police and they took the clothes she had been wearing that night (John Worboys's DNA had been found on her clothing) for DNA testing.

The police called in a specialist investigation team who launched an appeal for women to come forward and they were inundated with calls and information all leading back to John Worboys.

The police had finally started to link all of the attacks that had been happening across London to John. The police made many mistakes during the investigation including going to John's house and leaving when they couldn't get an answer and failing to search his cab and house because they figured he would have gotten rid of the evidence. John went to the police station the next day with his lawyer.

When the police finally did search his house they found his rape kit which he would take out with him in his cab. They also found the plastic cups in a cupboard which still contained victims DNA as well as traces of drugs and a vibrator which had a victims DNA on.

The police held identity parades and 26 out of 60 women had identified John Worboys as their attacker. A total of 102 women came forward and the police believe there could be many more victims who either have no recollection of John Worboys or that they don't feel comfortable reporting what had happened to them.

With so many woman from the ages of 18 to 34 reporting that they had been assaulted, the police had to choose the ones who had the most evidence and could possibly secure a conviction. They focused on the accounts of 14 women and 23 separate charges and went to court.

The trial lasted 8 weeks (John pleaded not guilty so that forced his victims to attend the trial and have to go through what happened to them again) and the 14 brave women told their stories. John tried to play the part of the innocent man and answered all of the questions put to him but he claimed the sex with all of the victims was consensual.

He couldn't beat the huge amount of evidence against him no matter how nice he tried to play himself off to be and he was found guilty on 19 counts and given an unlimited sentence with a minimum custodial term set at 8 years. Strangely he was cleared of two counts of spiking drinks.

On the 4th of January 2018, the UK was outraged when it was announced that John would be released from prison. It was a horrendous insult to the victims and there was public outcry. In November of 2018, it was announced that he was to remain in prison.

He has since been charged with four attacks on other women in May of 2019 which he confessed to.

My thoughts...

I remember this case well and I remember seeing the brave women who had gone through such trauma supporting one another and speaking out about what had happened to them. John Worboys looked a pathetic figure and it's disgusting to think of the lengths that he went to so that he could abuse women. It's a really sickening case.

I remember the sheer panic and outrage when there was the announcement that he was going to be released, luckily the survivors and the public pulled together and that decision was quashed.

It's frightening to think of the lengths that some people will go to just to harm others for their own satisfaction. I'm glad he's still in prison.

What are your thoughts on this case? Let me know in the comments below or come find me elsewhere on social media.

Plagiarism In The True Crime community | My Thoughts

(Yours truly. For all of my social media links, click here

I've been meaning to write this post for a few weeks but I've been so busy with other things that I've only now just got around to it. If you're a fan of true crime or have your own podcast, youtube channel or blog, you will no doubt have heard about some of the well known podcasts that have recently been exposed as ripping off other people's work.

Not every popular podcast has done this but a small number have been found out to have done so. One of my favourite podcasts: Trace Evidence has fallen victim to other people copying his work many times. Trace Evidence is solely run and maintained by Steven Pacheco who spends hours thoroughly researching every case. He puts it all together and uploads it to youtube and it must take up quite a lot of his week but he doesn't get the recognition or views/subscriptions that he deserves.

Some fans of his podcast brought to his attention that some of the other podcasts were using his work and not giving him a mention, worst still, some were even making money from Patreon whilst Steven says that he is lucky if he makes enough money from his work to buy a Blu-ray. It isn't fair and it annoys me (btw, check out, follow and subscribe to Trace Evidence on Twitter, the Trace Evidence Website and Youtube).

Hopefully you'll go and check out the quality content that Steven always posts and he'll continue to grow and grow.

There is a divide in the true crime community and some people are suspicious of others. I've had some podcasts contact me asking for information on various crimes that I've researched, some want me to talk on their podcasts and some just want me to give them the information which I find to be very lazy. If I'm researching a case, I go to the actual court documents and police reports etc, I never go to another blog or a podcast to get the information because that is just lazy and unfair.

If a blogger and a podcast have agreed to do a collaboration and they each credit each other then that's fine but this situation of taking someone else's hard work and claiming it to be your own whilst making money from it is not on.

I'm pretty sure some of my work has been copied. I try to find cases that not many people know about and find out as much information as I possibly can and it can take me a full week to put a series of posts relating to a case together. There's times when I've had to publish 4 or 6 separate posts because I have done so much research and try to go into as much detail as possible.

A couple of weeks ago when there was all this drama about plagiarism in the true crime community, there was a lot of people arguing on twitter. I tweeted that I was listening to some true crime podcasts and someone had retweeted and commented a bitchy comment which basically implied that I was jumping on the bandwagon and copying other people.

I was furious and ranted about it on my Instagram story (not exactly the right way to go about things but I suppose I was having a little Trisha Paytas moment). I was angry that this person who didn't know me and had never even looked at my blog was accusing me of plagiarism. For someone like me who has put a lot of hard work into my blog and spent hours upon hours researching, this really upset me.

I confronted him and he changed his tune, claimed it was a joke and tried to follow me but by then people had already responded to his comments and were saying their bit as well.

I keep getting asked about creating a podcast but I don't think I have the time to do it and it's very expensive. Me being a perfectionist, it would have to be as fabulous as Trace Evidence (don't worry I'm not going to copy lol) with the music and everything. I think I'm going to stick to my little blog for now.

There's so many true crime podcasts out there and some are amazing, you can tell a lot of time and research has gone into each episode and then there are others which are quick and sound like they either pinched someone else's work or read a few lines of wikipedia with no extra information or proper details.

So, that's my thoughts on plagiarism in the true crime community, I still think that it's going on and I wish there was something that could be done about it but what's positive is that people are waking up to it now and calling it out.

If you're going to write about true crime and create youtube videos about cases at least be passionate about what you do and it's also more respectful to the victims that you are talking about, you're sharing their stories and they deserve to have their story told properly.

What are your thoughts on this? Last week I posted about my experience of Meeting A Murderer which got a positive response. I also have some other stories I'm thinking of sharing. I am researching a case right now which will be in detail and in a few parts so if you're a fan of my longer posts stay tuned for that.

In the meantime, hope you are enjoying my recent posts on here.

Hope to see you elsewhere on my socials, I love interacting will fellow true crime, heavy metal & horror enthusiasts.

A Strange Experience Meeting A Killer | Personal | True Crime

If you follow my blog or social media you'll know that I have done a lot of research into true crime cases and serial killers. I have an interest in Criminology and you may or may not know that I studied the subject at University.

My interest in true crime has continued through the years and I guess it's just something I'm always going to be fascinated by, why some people do the things they do and the psychology behind it.

I was thinking the other day about my time at University and my experience on a particular course. I wasn't sure if I should share this story or not because I didn't know if anyone would be interested in reading it and I was a bit concerned that the person who it involves would be able to find it and to be honest, this isn't the type of person that I want to get on the wrong side of.

I've decided to share this post because I think it's an interesting (and a bit creepy) story and it's a reminder that you never know who's sat across from you at the train station or in a cafe or what people are really capable of.

I have to be very careful about what I say in this post because this person is easily recognisable and has been interviewed on TV and written a book so I've had to change a couple of little details but it's more or less the same story, so here goes...

My first course at University was Psychology and Criminology (don't let the glam image fool you, I'm a bit of a nerd lol) and I remember my first day, I was nervous, University was a big thing for me especially as I had worked really hard to get onto the course. It was a new chapter in my life and I had studied psychology and various courses at college so this was the next step. I was excited!

The first day I met people of all ages and some were professionals who had worked in the police force and it was really interesting to chat with people from all different backgrounds, everyone seemed so friendly.

My psychology professor was awesome and we became close (that's a story for another post lol), she wasn't what some people assume a psychology professor to be, she was heavily into all things Goth and she had the coolest office which looked more like a teenage Goth's bedroom.

It was lunchtime and we all headed into the cafeteria, some students had arrived late and we were all sat around on different tables. I was sat near the window with a cappuccino and a sandwich whilst some of my new friends were buying their lunch. This tall, broad shouldered guy appeared out of nowhere and asked if he could sit down next to me.

He had some psychology books with him and I said it was fine for him to sit next to me. He asked if I was on the same course as him to which I replied yes and he asked my name. I told him and he said "Nice to meet you Jo, I'm "Mark", I battered my ''relative'' to death with a hammer''. As he said this he had a smile on his face and I was in a mix of shock and wondering if this was just a joke, a strange joke at that.

I don't know if it was the reaction he wanted because I just sat there stunned thinking it was a really crap joke and not really funny but he proceeded to tell me that he murdered his relative, been in prison and wrote a book about it. His book is on Amazon and it all turned out to be true.

When it comes to people who commit murder, there's all kinds of different circumstances involved. Someone could be a victim of domestic abuse and act out in self defence, others do it for pleasure and some do it as an act of revenge or just random killing.

This guy ''Mark'' wouldn't stop telling everyone in the class about his story and some of the other students thought it was fascinating, like he was some kind of celebrity. I felt a lot of bad vibes. I wanted to have sympathy for him because he had told us that his ''relative'' had abused him and his family when they were children but I just couldn't get my head around the laughing, the smiling and the constant bragging.

It didn't help either that he was trying to hang around the females of the class as well as trying to chat up the professor but she was having none of it. He told me and my other female friends that if we ever had any trouble with boyfriends we were to tell him and he would ''sort them out''. Some of the girls in my class were younger and seemed to hang on his every word, getting excited because he gave them a signed copy of his book.

He gave me a signed copy of his book and I noticed that some of the details didn't add up to what he had told me and previously spoken about in the class. I felt really bad about it, like I was being a bad person because I felt suspicious of him. He told us he had a young daughter and showed us her picture. She was around the same age as the girls on my course and he made some comments that were a bit uncomfortable to me such as ''She's got curves in all the right places'' (whilst making hand gestures towards his chest) and ''The boys are always wanting a piece of her''.

I think he felt uncomfortable with me because I didn't give him the same attention that the others did. I wasn't impressed by him. I just got on with my work and wanted to carry on with the topics we were covering.

He'd walk into class and make a big entrance like he was a celebrity, sometimes he was late and we'd be in the middle of a discussion and he would walk in and start talking and announcing that he was there. He told us that he didn't really need to do that course as he knew a lot about psychology and he had made a lot of money from his book.

As time went on, there was a bit of an atmosphere between him and I. I wasn't rude to him or anything, I just didn't feel comfortable around him and he noticed that I was the only one not falling all over him.

One day in class we were talking about abuse in childhood and I spoke about my personal experience. I mentioned about the fear that some children go through everyday and everyone was listening to what I was saying. Suddenly, he got up and stormed out of the room.

He didn't come back for the rest of the afternoon and everyone was talking about him. I felt that maybe I had said something that had triggered him and I did feel bad about that but planned to have a quiet word with him.

He didn't come back for a few days and we thought he had left the course. I was left feeling that I had said something and felt a mixture of emotions about it.

He returned to class and everyone was asking where he had been and that they were worried, he looked towards me and said ''YOU UPSET ME WITH WHAT YOU SAID ABOUT BEING SCARED EVERYDAY''. I just sat there sinking in my chair as he went on about how my story really upset him and had put him in a deep depression. Everyone was looking at me in shock and it was awkward as hell, he was really angry with his face all red and I thought he was going to jump out of the chair and lunge for me at any moment.

I didn't know what to say back, I couldn't apologise (I can't remember if I did or not) because I hadn't said anything wrong in the first place. It was almost as if he was just looking for any tiny little thing to have a go at me.

You're probably wondering what this guy's story was, well he told us that he and his siblings had been abused as children by a relative and that he went on to criminal behaviour himself. He had spent a lot of years in and out of prison and when he got to his 40s he said that he started to have flashbacks to his childhood and when he got out of prison (again, I have to be careful with the details) the final time he decided that the reason his life had gone the way it had was because of this relative. He tracked this relative down who was now an elderly man and battered the man to death. Another disturbing aspect of this was that when he told me about the killing he smiled as he mentioned the brains all over the carpet.

After having a go at me in class, he announced that he was going to leave the course as it was reminding him of group therapy and he said goodbye to everyone but me. I was left feeling strange, I didn't know whether I was supposed to feel guilty or what cause I couldn't understand what I had done.

What I really thought it was about was that I hadn't acted like the other students, he knew that I had sussed him out (that's my opinion).

I haven't looked him up in years but the last time I did, I heard him on a radio interview and the difference in him on there to how he is in real life was quite something. I don't know what he was in prison for the other times but I do know that he did have a bit of a strange attitude towards women especially towards me, like an aggression. I was just a young, tiny Scottish girl and he was this big built guy in his 40s screaming at me so he didn't seem to have an issue shouting at women.

Anyway, this was a bizarre experience and I don't know if you've found this interesting at all but yes, that's my experience meeting a killer. It's strange and to this day I still don't know what to make of it all. What do you think you would have done in my shoes?

Was I wrong to feel bad vibes about him? Do you think he sensed that from me and that's why he acted hostile? who knows, let me know in your comments below.

I have some other stories I'm thinking of sharing at some point, let me know if you're interested in reading them. One of the stories involves childhood friends who went on to kill someone, let me know if you would like me to talk about that.

Continued from Part One

In part one I covered a little bit of Levi Bellfield's background to give you more of an idea about what kind of person he is. In this post I'm going to talk about his crimes, the victims and the aftermath.

As always, please be aware that disturbing details will be included in this post.

If you happened to live in the UK around March 2002, you'll no doubt have seen the news reports, the articles in the newspapers and the photographs of a pretty 13 year old schoolgirl by the name of Milly Dowler who had been reported missing.

The disappearance of Milly Dowler was a huge case here in the UK, nobody knew what had happened to this popular, beautiful and bubbly young girl. The police had no leads except for nuisance callers who would sickeningly provide false information which wasted investigators time.

Milly's real name was Amanda Jane Dowler and on the 21st of March 2002 she and her friends went to a cafe after school for a short period of time. Milly, who was just 13 years old was dressed in her usual school uniform and jacket with her schoolbag and hair tied up in a pony tail (her bag, purse and mobile phone have never been recovered). Shortly after 4pm, she was seen walking a friend across the road to a bus stop from the cafe.

Being the kindhearted girl that she was, she waited until her friend got safely on the bus before she began to walk away from the bus stop. As she waved to her friend who was now sat on the bus, it was the last time her friend was to see Milly alive.

Although CCTV cameras were able to track some of Milly's footsteps from school, there was a section towards the end when she was coming away from the bus stop that provided no sight of her whatsoever, like she had just vanished.

When hours passed by and she didn't return home or answer her calls or messages, Milly's family and friends knew that something was wrong. Milly would never ignore messages or calls.

Over the coming days, weeks and months, the area where Milly went missing in Walton-On-Thames in England was thoroughly searched and missing posters with Milly's photo were all over the place. Regular appeals were broadcast and a newspaper offered a financial reward to anyone who could provide correct information about Milly.

It would be 6 months before the devastating news came that Milly's body had been found dumped in a wooded area in Hampshire. The callous murderer just left her naked body there. It was sickening and heartbreaking.

It would be many years later before Levi Bellfield was found guilty of her murder, the police had suspected him for a long time.

On the night that Milly had disappeared, Levi (34) was house sitting with his 23 year old girlfriend. He'd been out all day and appeared back at the house around 11pm at night with cans of beer and a Chinese takeaway.

His girlfriend reported that he seemed normal that night, they ate the food and then went to bed. He woke up around 3am complaining that he couldn't sleep. He said that he wanted to go and check his girlfriend's apartment which was located in Walton On Thames. He took the dog with him and drove his girlfriend's car.

[We now know the circumstances of what went on from the moment that Milly disappeared to when she was found. Levi had waited in the bushes watching Milly before kidnapping her, he put the poor girl through hell for 14 hours, sexually assaulting her repeatedly and torturing her. He told the police that he took Milly to his mother's house originally before taking her to his girlfriend's apartment. It is believed that he strangled Milly around 6am the next day before dumping her body in the woods in Hampshire]

3 days later when his girlfriend returned to the apartment she noticed there was a strong smell of bleach and cleaning products. The place looked spotless which she found strange as Levi wasn't the domestic type. She also noticed that the bedding in one of the room's was missing as well as her car.

Levi explained that the dog had urinated on the bed so he had to throw away the bed sheets. He told her that he'd gone for a few drinks with a friend and was too drunk to drive her car home so he got a taxi. When they went to pick the car up, it was not there. Levi claiming that it must have been stolen. The truth was that he had suspected the car may have been caught on CCTV and got rid of it in case it ended up being traced back to him.

Despite alarm bells ringing and never really trusting a word he said, his girlfriend continued the relationship with him and they moved in together. The neighbours mentioned later that Levi seemed really polite and approachable when they first moved in but that soon changed. As I mentioned before, he didn't get on too well with some of the elderly neighbours and had allegedly spread weedkiller on an elderly neighbours garden. He also put barbed wire up around his home, kept two wild dogs in his back garden and had a habit of stealing gates etc from houses a few blocks down.

Levi was arrogant and walked around like he owned the place. Neighbours found him intimidating and felt sorry for his girlfriend, one neighbour told investigators that the couple would act as if they were the perfect couple but the reality was that Levi was in control of that relationship and did all the talking. His girlfriend often looked scared of him and there were many times that she would be seen crying.

As I mentioned in part one, Levi had a history of being abusive towards women despite the fact that he idolised his mother.

At the time of Milly's murder, Levi was still working as a doorman at a nightclub and on the side he would go around clamping people's vehicles.

In Feb 2003 the public and the police were still in the dark about what had happened to Milly Dowler and London was rocked again by another horrific murder of a young woman.

On the 4th February 2003 in Hampton, a pretty 19 year old blonde student by the name of Marsha McDonnell had been out for the evening with a friend to a cinema. She caught the late bus home and at the end of her journey she got off at her stop and began to walk the short distance to her house as she would always do.

It was 11:30pm at night and the sky was pitch black, as she was walking on her way to the home that she shared with her family, someone struck her very violently over the back of the head with a hammer. There were no witnesses around. Marsha was eventually found and rushed to hospital where she sadly died the next day.

The bus that Marsha had been travelling on had a CCTV camera and from this the police were able to identify a vehicle they were interested in that was in the area around the same time as Marsha was seen getting off of the bus.

One wonders if Levi had an idea that he was getting too close to getting caught because he waited a year before he struck again. This time he targeted another pretty blonde girl named Kate Sheedy.

Kate was only 18 years old and had been travelling on a bus on her way home after spending some time with her friends. When she got off of the bus, she noticed a car was parked up in front of her in a strange angle. She didn't feel comfortable and decided to cross the road. All of a sudden the car swerved up onto the pavement and then drove towards her.

She was knocked over and the driver of the car stopped and reversed back over her before driving off, leaving Kate in absolute agony and terror. It was a miracle that she was still conscious. She had suffered horrendous injuries, all of her ribs were broken, her spleen ruptured and she had extensive spinal damage. Despite all of this, Kate managed to call the police and get help.

Kate's life hung in the balance for quite a while, doctors were not sure if she would make it but she defied the odds and began to be stronger day by day. Her strength returned and so did her memory. She was able to give investigators a complete description of the vehicle.

The police began to see a pattern emerging of someone who was targeting pretty young blonde girls but still they had no leads.

It was just three months before Levi struck again. This time he murdered a 22 year old girl named Amelie Delagrange who was a language student from France. Like the other girls (except for Milly), she had travelled on the bus home after spending the evening with friends.

Police believe that Amelie fell asleep during the bus journey and missed her stop so got off and decided to walk the rest of the way home by making a short cut over Twickenham Green. Like Marsha, someone had approached Amelie from behind with a fierce blow to the back of the head. Levi took her phone with him and the police would later track this to a property at Walton On Thames. The net was closing in on him.

On one of the televised appeals, one of Levi's ex partners had been watching and recognised his car from the CCTV footage. She went straight to the police and told them everything she knew about Levi Bellfield. She told them about the magazines with the blonde women's faces scrubbed out, the abuse that she suffered and the rape kit that he had hidden in her garage which included a balaclava, a kitchen knife, a bin liner and another magazine with women's faces scrubbed out.

The police went to his house to arrest him and that was quite the scene. Levi, who was naked, decided to run upstairs and hide in his attic. When one of the police officers found him he ordered Levi to stand up before stating ''You're nicked'' (You're arrested).

His house was thoroughly searched and the police soon realised there was more to Levi Bellfield than they had first believed. It got to the point where there was 27 active investigations into him for various reports of rape, sexual assault and murder.

The police decided to focus on the suspected murder investigations first. They are still investigating murders going way back to 1980 that they believe that Levi may have a connection to.

With an overwhelming amount of evidence, Levi Bellfield stood trial where he was reported to have shown no remorse throughout. He felt sorry for himself telling the court ''I'm fighting for my life here''

There was no emotion as he was found guilty in February 2008 of the murders of Marsha McDonnell and Amelie Delagrange and the attempted murder of Kate Sheedy. He was sentenced to life imprisonment.

9 years after her death, Levi Bellfield (now calling himself Yusuf Rahim after converting to Islam in prison) was found guilty of the kidnapping, sexual assault and murder of Milly Dowler. He was reported to have yawned and gave no emotion as he was sentenced,

Levi Bellfield will never be released from prison. He was given a full life order.

In 2011, it was reported in the press that during the investigation into Milly Dowler's disappearance, some reporters who worked for the News Of the World had hacked Milly's personal voicemail messages. The newspaper was also found to have invaded the privacy of many other high profile figures and celebrities. The newspaper closed in 2011.

My thoughts...

Such a horrible case to cover and a horrendous individual. It's strange that someone who worshipped their mother so much could have such a hatred for women. Some people believe that it stemmed from girls at school who bullied him or that he was so insecure because he thought that the pretty young blonde girls that he was interested in wouldn't be interested in him. I was asked the other day what colour of hair did Levi's mother have, she had dark hair so it's not that you could say there was a connection there.

Nobody knows why he did it and he would never tell anyone. He's a monster with no remorse or feeling for anybody and it's crazy to think that he has all of these children, hopefully they've been able to try and get on with their lives. I saw a documentary a few years ago which featured some of his daughters.

The Milly Dowler investigation went on for years, her poor family have been through hell and then to learn that her phone was hacked by people who were just looking for a story, it's horrendous.

My heart breaks for all of the families and for these beautiful young women who had their whole lives in front of them and for Kate Sheedy who is an inspiration.

Pure Evil: Levi Bellfield | Part One

(Levi Bellfield, Picture cred: thesun.co.uk)

I've researched some pretty sick individuals during my true crime blogging but one of the worst cases has to be of the English serial killer Levi Bellfield. This was a man (if you could call him a man) who had an intense hatred for women and in particular, young blonde women who he would refer to in derogatory terms.

Before I get into the case, I have to warn you that I will be sharing some very disturbing details so please keep this in mind. I will try my best to not be so graphic but I do have to share some of the details to give you an idea of what really happened.

So let's begin...

Levi Bellfield (who know calls himself Yusuf Rahim after converting to Islam behind bars) was born on the 17th of May 1968 in Isleworth in London. He grew up on a council estate in southwest London. His father passed away when he was just 10 years old so he became incredibly close to his mother, a bit too close to his mother some might say. He also had two sisters and brothers.

Throughout his early years in school he suffered bullying as he was quite a skinny, pale child. His nickname at school was ''Rabbit'' because of a disgusting rumour that he had stolen his sister's pet rabbit and sexually assaulted the animal before breaking or cutting it's neck. Some people believe this horrendous incident to have taken place, others say that it was just a rumour.

He wasn't exactly popular with girls and slept in bed with his mother and sucked his thumb up until he was a teenager. Throughout his life, before his arrest, he would continue to sleep in his mother's bed whenever he would visit her, he referred to her as ''Mummy'' and his previous girlfiends would mention how they thought it was unhealthy that his mother was still bathing him when he was in his 30s.

They often say that a man who is close to his mother is often a gentleman to other women but that is not always the case as you will see as we go further.

Levi was tired of being picked on for being skinny and decided that he wanted to bulk up a bit so began working out. Soon enough he had built himself up to be quite an intimidating figure. His stature enabled him to get jobs as a nightclub bouncer.

It's unknown where he got his hatred towards blonde women, it could have been his experiences at school or a previous bad relationship with someone who just happened to be blonde? Nobody knows for sure where the anger came from. Maybe he desired these women and felt insecure, that he wasn't good enough for them? There are quite a few theories as to why.

In his job as a nightclub bouncer, he had a mini van with a mattress in the back and blacked out windows. He enjoyed picking up drunk women at the clubs and taking them back to his van. He had an appalling attitude towards women despite being so close to his mother.

Previous girlfriends said he was an absolute nightmare to be with. They never knew what mood he was going to be in from one day to the next and he would physically assault them. He would be careful to leave bruises on the women where nobody could see them so he would never hit them in the face. He also enjoyed sticking his fingers into the sore bruises afterwards.

People who knew him said that he was arrogant and would walk about like he owned the place. He didn't get on with an elderly couple where he lived and allegedly poured weed killer all over their treasured garden.

During my research I couldn't find anyone who had a good word to say about him. He really was a nasty piece of work. One of his girlfriends mentioned that he would take catalogues and magazines and scribble out all of the faces of the blonde women with black marker pen.

He'd been in trouble with the law before, having been arrested in 1981 for burglary and then for assaulting a police officer in 1991. By 2002 his total stints in prison for petty crimes & violence added up to almost a year.

As a way to make some extra money, he would place adverts in the local newspaper advertising a brothel. He would tell the unsuspecting potential customers to go to a particular address where this supposed brothel was. When the person arrived, Levi would keep watch and whilst they were away from their car he would clamp their wheel. When the person came back, Levi told them to pay him a few hundred pounds if they wanted the clamp removed.

Despite his terrible personality and average appearance, he still managed to father 11 children with three different women.

Levi would often be seen driving around in his van and stopping at bus stops to try and chat up young blonde women.

In my next post I will be going into Levi Bellfield's crimes and what happened to his victims as well as his arrest and what happened afterwards. Hope I'll see you in the next post x
