Twisted Threesome!! | ''They Did Everything He Told Them To Do & Worse'' | Sick Fantasies And A Disturbing Bond

This case is without a doubt, one of the most sickening cases that I have researched and written about. I'm sure after you've read the details in this post (if you are not from the UK and unfamiliar with the story) you will be just as sickened as I am. 

I always say that one of the toughest experiences in life, is the role of being a parent, not meaning for that to sound negative in any way, but it comes with a huge amount of responsibility....and a lot of fear. I'm not a parent but I respect people who are doing their best to raise their children in a loving and caring manner. One of the things I think must be hard for parents is the moment when your child gets to a certain age and you want them to be sociable and to learn and develop around other children. That moment when parents may have to return to work and have to entrust their child to a local nursery or child-minder. 

When parents dropped off their little bundles of joy at the 'Little Ted's' Nursery in Plymouth, England in 2008, they felt comfortable in the fact that their little ones would be in the care of the 'caring' and 'lovely' Vanessa George. Vanessa was like a big, fun auntie with the kids, she was a bubbly married mother of two children and got on (it appeared) wonderfully with the parents, the children and her colleagues. Nobody had any reason to believe that this smiley woman who would sing songs with the kids, read stories and hand out cookies and milk, could be any way sinister. Vanessa seemed like the sort of person that you couldn't ever imagine her using unsavory language, she appeared to be that squeaky-clean. 

However, with a lot of things in life, especially when it comes to people, Some things (and people) are just too good to be true. It tuned out, in reality....Vanessa George was a monster and even worse, a monster in a small gang of monsters. Not to sugarcoat the truth here so I'm just going to say it, she was part of a paedophile ring.

How did this popular woman who was a married mother herself, be capable of such horrendous things? Well, when it comes to situations with women like this, whether it be a child abuser or a murderer, they will often blame someone else, for example, a man they might be in a relationship with. They will claim that they were forced into committing evil acts by their male partner and that they only went along with it out of fear for their own lives. Just look at the likes of Myra Hindley and Rose West, both of them tried to play it off as the innocent victims of powerful, evil men but it turned out that they were just as evil as their male partners and in many situations, it was indeed them who called the shots. Vanessa George already had evil in her, the mask just fell off when she met someone who shared her sick, hidden dark thoughts and fantasies.

For some people, having a 20+ year marriage, healthy, beautiful children, friends and a great workplace, would be enough in life, a true blessing but for Vanessa George....she was bored. In her late 30's she was looking for a bit of excitement and attention so she found herself online talking to other men who made her feel good about herself, in particular a man named Colin Blanchard. 

Colin was married himself and was a fantasist to the extreme, people who knew him offline described him as 'Billy Bulls**t' because he couldn't go a day without telling a lie. He'd come up with all sorts of grand stories about himself. He claimed that he was a millionaire with lots of cars (when in reality he was struggling to pay his bills and had huge amounts of debt), a luxurious home and would be back and forth to Dubai. Vanessa believed everything he told her and she seemed to hang on his every word. Polite conversation between the pair soon became sexual and Colin's interest seemed to be sparked whenever Vanessa mentioned her day job as a nursery assistant. 

Another dark secret that Colin had been hiding as well as his real lifestyle and mounting debts, was his criminal history. Colin was a filthy, disgusting child predator who had run-ins with the law and had been placed on the sex offenders register for owning indecent images of children. It's sickening to know that this thing was basically given a slap on the wrist because according to the law in this country, he only downloaded the images, he didn't make them himself. He was only on the register for five years before being removed. So this dangerous man who was a threat to children and a pathological liar, just had his slate wiped clean as if nothing ever happened. A disgrace.

As mentioned before, the conversations between Vanessa and Colin turned sexual. It soon switched from discussing favourite positions and fetishes to Colin encouraging Vanessa to talk about the children she worked with. The sick bond between the pair of them was so strong at this point that nothing was off the table, they told each other everything and in Vanessa, Colin had found someone who was a willing participant in the discussion of his fantasies and was also so devoted to him that she was only willing to carry out whatever he told her to to. 

Like all child predators, there is only escalation, these types of people (creatures....I don't know what to call them), the fantasies, the horrific pictures, the nightmarish videos of abuse that they obtain from the dark web, these only sustain them for a while, they will always want the real thing. There will be incidences with these predators such as hanging around outside a school or exposing themselves in a family restaurant. There is always red flags with these people and all that ever happens is that they get a slap of on the wrist, a caution and not long after this a child is attacked, murdered or sadly both. 

With Colin, he'd managed to get away with his actions in the past and here he was on the internet manipulating this bored, gullible woman (who was in no means innocent) into carrying out his fantasies, she was his puppet. Vanessa wasn't the only one that he was talking to online, he had managed to find another woman online by the name of Angela who was also in her late 30s and all three of them would communicate with each other and share their fantasies. Colin had control of both women and they were only willing and happy to do whatever he asked of them no matter how depraved and sick his demands would be.

I will try to be careful with my wording here but Colin had requested that Vanessa take in a sex toy to work and use it on one of the children, she would also use children's toys found in the nursery on her victims. He also told her to do various other things and record everything on her mobile phone to send back to him. She would even record things such as changing the children's diapers and take pictures. The sick videos and images would be sent to Colin and all three would later share and discuss the horrific materials with each other and lord knows what else (i don't even what to know and I'm sure you don't want to know either). 

Over the course of 6 months Vanessa sent around 10,000 messages to Colin which included pictures and videos. Investigators originally believed that the number of children abused was around 300, some of the children could be identified but others were pictured or filmed without their faces showing (it makes you feel sick doesn't it?). Investigators managed to identify at least 30 of the victims so far. Vanessa targeted young children it is believed because they were too young to speak up or realise what was happening. Vanessa admitted to making 124 indecent images of children. I was later revealed that she owned two mobile phones, one she claimed was her normal, everyday phone and second phone was her (as she called it) 'fun phone' which was used to record the abuse and forward on the sickening materials to Colin. Vanessa was arrested after police had searched Colin Blanchard's home computer (after a tip-off from a disgruntled business partner) and found all of the disgusting and indecent pictures and videos which all traced back to her. 

As a result of what happened at Little Ted's nursery in Plymouth, a whole review and investigation was done by child safeguarding services who found that security as well as proper child safety procedures was seriously lacking. Vanessa George pretty much had the run of the place and other colleagues were either too busy gossiping over cups of coffee or seriously lacking in their experience of how to look after children properly. The fact that Vanessa was able to carry out these sickening acts for months on end without anyone noticing is really telling of how that place was run (or not run as the case appears to be). 

Vanessa and Colin were arrested and Angela was tracked down and had her home searched. When the police arrived they found that she lived in quite dire circumstances and was in huge amounts of debts herself, often turning to sex work to make ends meet. It turned out that Angela was not the more quieter of the three of them, in her messages about her fantasies she was reportedly even more graphic and as well as everything else which was sick and disturbing enough, she talked about sex with animals. 

It was later revealed that another two women, both named 'Tracy' were connected to Colin and had also partaken in child abuse bringing the sick total of members of this horrible gang to 5. Colin was always the ring leader and controller of it all with the evil women happy to go along with everything. 

The sentences were pathetic but were as follows: 

Vanessa George was given an indeterminate sentence meaning that there was no actual release date set but she would have to prove that she was safe to be released. The judge did say that she would have to serve at least seven years before even being considered for parole. This was back in 2009 and Vanessa George has since been released from prison despite public outcry from the parents of victims and the public. 

Colin Blanchard was also given an indeterminate sentence with a minimum of 9 years to serve before parole consideration. He is also now back on the streets. 

Angela Allen was issued an indeterminate sentence but again she only served 5 years and has been a free woman for quite some time now. 

With the two women named 'Tracy', Tracy Lyons was sentenced 7 years (but only served 2 years and was released early) and Tracy Dawber was sentenced to 5 years. 

After a reported review and re-vamp of both the services, new staff, training and facilities, 'Little Ted's' has now been re-opened as 'Greenshoots' with the upmost focus on child safety and care. 

This was a horrible case to cover and to know these monsters are out of prison after everything they've done. I can't imagine what the parents must be thinking and feeling. The anger must be insane, how do you even cope with that? I have such respect for the parents and their strength and dignity throughout the whole nightmare.

''A Sadistic Monster From The Age of Just 11 Years Old'' | The Wedding Day Massacre | *Warning: GRAPHIC DETAILS*

Arthur Hutchinson is still a name that sends chills down the spine of many people who live in Hartlepool, England to this day. He nicknamed himself' The Fox' and from childhood it was plain to see that Arthur was never going to be on a positive path in life. Having been born into poverty on the 19th of February 1941 in Hartlepool, County Durham, his upbringing was difficult and his sisters often tormented him and taunted him. Despite the difficulties in the household, Arthur was close with his mother and had gotten on well with his step-father, very little is known about his biological father. 

He'd suffered an accident when he was a young child which resulted in him being hospitalised. He reportedly spend three days in a coma and when he finally came around he was confused and his personality had changed. The trauma of what had happened to him had a profound physical and psychological effect on him and according to those who knew him closely, he was never the same. Some people believe that it was this particular accident and head trauma that resulted in what was to be come of him later on. 

There was an incident when Arthur was around the age of seven when he and one of his sisters got into an argument. He flew into one of his rages (which were becoming something of a regular occurrence since the accident) and lunged at his sister with a pair of scissors. Luckily she escaped with minor scratches but this was another frightening sign that Arthur was becoming out of control and his temper was getting worse. His mother and family hoped for the best that he would grow out of it and put his erratic behaviour down to his age and still recovering from the trauma of the accident. 

However things did not improve, they continued to get worse....far worse! As a child of just 11 years old, Arthur was continuing his spiral out of control and his behaviour was becoming more disturbing as he developed an urge to commit sexual crimes. It's not known if he saw something on TV that he shouldn't have been exposed to, or that he had been abused himself (there's been no mention over the years about himself being abused) but he was involved in a sexual attack of a young girl. It's a horrific thought to think that he could have been capable of such a sickening act at such a tender age but that is what was happening and it continued throughout the following years, he'd faced the courtroom numerous times because of his disgusting and predatory behaviour.

It wasn't until he attempted to murder his half brother over a dispute about money that he was finally locked up for just over five years. His behaviour up until this point was not addressed properly. Arthur had been in nothing but trouble from a young age he'd been involved in petty crime, violence, attempted murder and sexual assault, it was clear that things were only going to get worse but still, he learned nothing from his time in prison, as soon as he was released he was set to go on and commit the most evil and sickening crimes imaginable. 

During his time out of prison there were moments when it looked like Arthur could have had a chance at a normal life and worked on changing his ways but he was too far gone and any moments where he had demonstrated a 'nice side' was short lived. He'd been married a few times and each marriage did not last long due to his constant infidelity and he couldn't keep his temper in check, often lashing out violently and during sex he would often be extremely aggressive. Arthur was a danger to women and even his own mother fell victim to his evil rages, he had struck his mother quite a few times over the years and had no problems doing this in front of other people. 

Arthur was never out of trouble, constantly committing burglaries and had also committed a horrendous sexual assault. The police finally managed to get their hands on him but whilst he was at the police station he asked if he could use the bathroom, before anyone knew what was happening, Arthur Hutchinson had escaped out of the bathroom window (it makes one think about the time that infamous serial killer, Ted Bundy, managed to escape from a courthouse after he tricked officers into letting him use the library for study. So Arthur was on the run for nearly a month and it was during this time that on the 23rd of October 1983 his horrible career or crime was to take and even more sickening and evil turn. Whilst on the run he had been trying to keep a low profile and was continuing to break into homes, steal items, steal food and drift from place to place. However, on the cold night of the 23rd of October his plan to break into another home turned deadly. 

Arthur had broken into the family home of the Laitner family who had just been celebrating the wedding of Basil (59) and (55 year old) Avril's oldest daughter, Suzanne. It was a beautiful ceremony which took place at the house and the two parents couldn't have been more proud. After the celebrations were over, Basil, Avril and their younger daughter (18 year old Nicola) and their son Richard, all settled down in the house for the night when Arthur Hutchinson broke in via a patio door. The Laitner's were a well respected and hardworking family who had worked hard for everything they had, they had a beautiful, luxurious home and the wedding had been attended by numerous relatives and friends who'd travelled far and wide. They were well liked in their local community and were very popular, but on this night, which was supposed to be a night of joy, happiness and contentment after a beautiful celebration of marriage at their dream family home, it all ended with a horrifying nightmare.

Arthur managed to get into the house after he had been watching the house all day, he knew there had been a wedding and could see how well-off the family were. His first victim was reportedly Richard who was repeatedly stabbed to death in his bedroom. It was a ferocious attack and the scene was horrifying. A very gruesome and horrifying end for a young man, who at only 28 years old, had his whole life ahead of him and dreams and goals he was working on never to have the chance to accomplish. With all the commotion Richard's father Basil decided to get up and check on him, this was the horrible moment in which the 59 year old man was greeted by Arthur Hutchinson who stabbed him three times, the force and shock of the vicious attack caused Basil to fall backwards down the stairs. 

Arthur was not yet done his horrendous rampage on this innocent, lovely family who did nothing to deserve this evil. Avril was next to suffer with repeated stabbings that reportedly totalled 26 times, she fought as hard as she could for her life against this evil monster. There was no need for this level of sick murderous violence, he could have just burgled the house and then left but he was full of rage, full of demonic anger, who knows what was going through his sick mind but if all that wasn't enough hell, he coldly walked up the stairs to 18 year old Nicola's bedroom and planned for her to be his final victim. 

There was blood all over the place and the demon himself, Arthur Hutchinson, was covered in blood. Nobody could imagine the sheer terror that Nicola must have felt seeing this evil thing in her bedroom. He threatened to kill the poor girl if she didn't do what he demanded, he sexually assaulted her as he was covered in the blood of her family. His sickness knew no bounds, after what he had just done, he was turned on by it all and it just makes you feel sick to think of such evil but these were his actions that night. Nicola at this point was unaware that he had murdered her parents and her brother but seeing the blood gave her an idea that something horrendous must have happened to her family. 

It was only when the sick killer and ra*ist forced the poor girl to walk down the stairs after he'd finished attacking her that the realisation of what he had done to her family had come to be known. The deceased body of her father Basil was lying on the ground, his blood everywhere and she was forced to walk through her father's blood in her bare feet and out into the wedding marquee that was still in the garden from the wedding celebrations just hours before. 

It was in this beautiful marquee that more hell was to be suffered as the sick and evil monster that is Arthur Hutchinson, handcuffed the utterly terrified and traumatised young girl to a chair where she was subjected to more sexual assaults before he blindfolded her. He only stopped the sexual assaults when he decided that he wanted to take a break and eat some of the leftovers from the wedding buffet that was still left on one of the tables. He even drank wine and talked random things about what he had done to her parents and brother. He was determined to put this poor child through never-ending hell. The ordeal was still not over as Nicola was dragged back up to her bedroom where more sexual assaults continued over and over and over again. Nicola believed that she was going to to die and at that point, any bit of strength left in her had evaporated, she was beyond traumatised. Nobody could imagine the sheer pain and trauma of what going through that must have been like, none of us ever want to know for that matter. 

He finally brought Nicola back downstairs, still covered in the blood of her family and in utter despair to her surprise he left her there alive. It took Nicola three days to be able to talk after this horrifying ordeal, the hell was unimaginable for this young girl. Investigators were able to take the details of what Nicola had been brave and strong enough to have given them plus the teeth marks that had been left on a piece of cheese found on one of the tables in the marquee which had partially been eaten by Arthur. There was also a thumb print off his which had been left behind on a glass. He was very careless in leaving evidence behind but he was that pathetically sure of himself and how clever he thought he was that he probably assumed that the police wouldn't examine them because hundreds of people had been in the marquee previously. So he probably believed that evidence of the murderer would be hard to track. 

He managed to evade justice for about two weeks but was finally caught on the 5th of November 1983, hiding on a farm in Hartlepool. Initially he was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 18 years which horrifically he would have been out right now if it wasn't for Leon Britton (who was the home secretary in 1983) having it determined that he serve a whole life tariff, meaning he will never leave prison alive. I'm sad to say that this monster is still breathing at the current age of 83 (at the time of writing this post - 2024), he's appealed his sentences numerous times to no avail and never expressed any remorse for what he did. 

Despite how evil he truly is and everything he had done, his mother (Just like Ted Bundy's mother) had this never-ending unconditional love for him and stood by him despite everything. She refused to believe that he was responsible for the horrifying events that occurred on the 23rd of October 1983. The red flags had always been there from his childhood right up until the prison gate was shut behind him for the final time, she lived in denial about him. Maybe because the thought of your own son being this horrific monster was just too much to take. You can't help but feel sorry for her in some regard because obviously she never wanted any of that to happen. She was also a victim of her own son and possibly psychologically damaged in some ways herself. I think the knowledge that your own son could do such things is enough to drive anyone insane and mentally ill. 

Nicola who was incredibly brave during the trial as well as on that horrific night in which she was subjected to the most unbelievable nightmare as well as losing her family in the most evil way, stood and faced Arthur Hutchinson in court. The evil monster claimed that she was actively part of everything that had happened. Nicola bravely stated the facts of the case and it was revealed how she was so incredibly brave that night that she went into automatic survival-mode. Whilst the sexual assaults were taking place, Nicola pretended to Arthur that she was enjoying what was happening in an attempt to survive, she knew that if she protested against him, he would most likely kill her too. Despite the horrendous ordeal that she was going through she had the remarkable presence of mind to keep composure, follow his demands, play the role and keep herself alive. When she was able to speak about what happened her information which was in remarkable detail, was invaluable to the police. 

She may have only been 18 years old but she was an incredibly strong and brave young woman to be able to do everything that she did. Today Nicola would be 59 years old (I hope she is still alive and well and has been able to go on and live a full and healthy life), the same age her father Basil was when he was horrendously murdered. Wherever Nicola is I wish her nothing but the best and truly admire her. I can imagine that knowing that monster is still alive must be hard, one wonders what she must think about that. Would his death bring her some sort of closure? Maybe she has come to some sort of peace in her mind knowing that he's been behind bars all of these years? It's hard to imagine what she and the rest of her family have been going through all of these years. 

This case might be 41 years old but time has done nothing to dull the horrendous facts of this case, it truly is the stuff of nightmares. I know it must have been a very difficult read and it was a very difficult case to research and write about. My heart goes out to Nicola and the surviving members of her family as well as anyone who has had the unfortunate experience of having had Arthur Hutchinson in their lives. RIP Basil, Avril and Richard, you will never be forgotten.

''You Know Me, You Know My Family.....I Did What They Do'' | Like Uncle, Like Nephew: Ivan & Matthew Milat

Continued From Part One!!!!

On further investigation, it turned out that Paul had been a backpacker in Australia previously and reported being abducted by a man named 'Bill' in 1990 who just happened to fit the description of Ivan Milat. This indeed was the case. Ivan (calling himself 'Bill') had previously picked up Paul and was playing Mr Nice guy offering to take him to his location. However at some point during the journey 'Bill' went from being friendly to complaining about tourists and making racist remarks. Paul started to feel uncomfortable and noticed that Bill had suddenly changed in his demeanour as they drove closer and closer to what Paul would later discover was on the way to Belanglo State Forest. When Paul asked 'Bill' what was going to happen, 'Bill' made it appear that he was going to just rob him and let him go, however when Paul spotted a rope in the backseat of the car he realised that this was something far more sinister. Paul decided to jump out of the car and make a run for it, as he did so he ran in a zig zag fashion as 'Bill' now had a gun in his hand. Paul managed to get into another car and luckily escaped, he gave is statement to the police where it remained on file for a long time. 

It was back home in England when Paul saw a newspaper article about the backpacker murders and took it upon himself to fly to Australia to help identify their number one suspect...Ivan Milat. After a positive identification, Ivan was charged and faced trial for which he was found guilty of all 7 murders and sentenced to life for each victim. The court and investigators still believed he did not act alone. In prison, Ivan signed his letters with the words 'Ivan The Innocent'. Ivan pointed the fingers at other family members and in particular 'Richard', his brother who is often suspected to have been Ivan's real accomplice. Richard had previously bragged to work colleagues that ''Stabbing a woman is like cutting a loaf of bread'' and that he knew that there was more bodies that had not been found yet. Richard also had belongings of the deceased victims in his house and helped Ivan remove guns when they found out that he was under surveillance from the police. 

In a bizarre interview with 60 Minutes Australia from 1996, Richard along with one of Ivan's sisters and her husband claim to support Ivan, that Ivan is 100% innocent and that they are not involved in any murders. All of this despite the fact that Richard was helping Ivan store victim's belongings, move guns, bragged about stabbing women and more victims unidentified. In this interview, Richard (who comes across as quite shady, argumentative and defensive at times) pleads ignorant to everything and claims he doesn't remember saying anything about stabbing women or other victims. Ivan's sister (who was caught changing dates on photographs to try and provide Ivan with alibis on the dates of missing backpackers) bangs on about how she believes he is innocent and will always stand by him until he tells her otherwise. The husband sat next to her was no better (he seemed a bit terrified and kept repeating the word 'there' every 2 seconds). This was what I was meaning earlier on in my writing about this case, that his family is like a cult. 

So much like a cult, that it is frightening how this thrill of committing crime and murder has continued to grow in that family that continues to further expand. Drama continues with the Milat family and distant relatives with various petty crimes but it is Ivan's great-nephew, Matthew who's the latest Milat member to grab the newspaper headlines for all of the wrong reasons. 

Matthew idolised his uncle Ivan so much so that the 19 year old studied the murders (or was given privy information by other family members, you be the judge) and decided that he was going to step into Ivan's shoes and commit a murder.

Together with an accomplice (Cohen Klein), Matthew and Cohen lured a 17 year old boy (David Auchterlonie) to the Belanglo State Forest in 2010 on the victim's birthday and killed the poor boy with an axe. The two monsters even recorded the horrific killing on a mobile phone. 

In typical Milat fashion he couldn't wait to brag about how he had followed in his uncle's footsteps and said to a friend: 

''You know me, you know my family...I did what they do'' - Matthew Milat. 

Matthew Milat was sentenced to 43 years in prison to serve at least 30 years. Cohen Klein pleaded guilty to the murder and was ordered to serve 32 years with the possibility of parole in 22 years. Cohen is also 19 years old and the pair are still alive and serving time in prison. Even when Matthew was arrested, members of the Milat family came to support him and they still support him now with regular visits and communication. 

The Milat family are a family of secrets who will cover up for each other but are also known to point the finger at others in certain cases. Ivan was important to them almost as if he had become the head of the family especially more so when their father died. The only Milat sibling to speak out against the family and Ivan was Ivan's estranged brother 'Boris' who's wife had an affair with Ivan. Boris claims that he knew that Ivan wasn't 'normal' from the age of 10 and always believed that he would go on to kill someone. 

Boris claims that he is nothing like Ivan or his family and has reportedly changed his name in an effort to distance himself over the years and knows that the Milat name has a bad reputation attached to it.

It's heartbreaking to know that these young people who were on, what must've seemed like a trip of a lifetime to Australia ended up losing their lives in such a horrific way. I also feel heartbroken for the families and these stories about backpackers going missing, being robbed, murdered, assaulted are not just something that has occurred in Australia. We've seen this happen all over the world even to this day.

Backpacking is something that has never interested me, in fact it scares me because it's a dangerous world that we live in no matter what era of time, 70s, 80s, 90s and now, you'll hear a story of something sinister that has happened involving backpackers in any part of the world. I think that when we travel we can be at our most vulnerable at times. We have to try and keep each other safe and really think about the pros and cons of visiting lands that are unfamiliar to us to ensure our safety.

RIP to known victims... James Gibson, Deborah Everist, Simone Schmidl, Gabor Neugebauer, Anja Habschied, Caroline Clarke and Joanne Walters. If there are unidentified victims still out there, I hope and pray that one day that they are found or that a member of the Milat family speaks up once and for all and tells the truth. My thoughts also with the families of the victims, the survivors and Paul Onions who was incredibly brave and selfless in his effort to bring a monster to justice. RIP to David Auchterlonie

''Sta**ing A Woman Is Like Cutting A Loaf of Bread...There's More Bodies Out There'' | The Backpacker Serial Killer: Ivan Milat

The beautiful country of Australia is known for many things, from the stunning landscape, incredible actors and actresses, Iconic TV shows like 'Neighbours' and 'Home And Away', right through to music legends such as Kylie Minogue and INXS. But there's also a darker side to this beautiful place, like a lot of other countries, Australia is no stranger to crime and horrific stories. In the background of all of this beauty, talent and gifts that Australia and it's people have shared with the world, there is also the chilling legacy of one of the most sickening serial killers in history, Ivan Milat. 

A man so terrifying that countless books, documentaries and even a horror movie (as well as a TV series) has been made detailing his horrific actions or has been based on his crimes. Many horror fans will be familiar with the 'Wolf Creek' Film and TV series about the character 'Mick Taylor' who stalks, tortures and murders young backpackers touring Australia. I remember seeing the movie 'Wolf Creek' for the very first time and I remember feeling shocked, it was an incredible horror movie that did keep you on the edge of your seat but to learn that it was based on a real story was even more chilling. 

Ivan Milat was quite a complex character and depending on who you talk to, you'll get a different version of who he really was. I say 'was' because Ivan is no longer on this earth, he passed away on the 27th of October 2019 at the age of 74 of cancer, having reportedly spent his final years in a great deal of pain. What he endured in his final years was nothing compared to the sheer hell that he put his victims through as well as the never ending heartache, utter despair and grief that he caused the loved ones of innocent young people who just wanted to enjoy life and the beauty of what Australia had to offer. 

Ivan was a racist who had an issue with 'outsiders' coming to Australia for work, in his mind, the 'outsiders' were taking the jobs away from real Australians, a narrow-minded stance considering his own father was an immigrant to the country from Croatia. There was no doubt that Ivan was a hardworker and his numerous relatives often depended on him financially as well as with dealing with other tasks but the truth was, he was a cold-blooded monster and hunted humans as well as animals, for fun. 

One of 14 children, Ivan came from quite a large family which was more like a cult. As mentioned before, his father (Stjepan) was an immigrant from Croatia and because of his lonely upbringing, he did his best to have as big a family as he could. Ivan's mother (Margaret) was born and bred in Australia and when it came to who ruled the roost in the Milat family, it was pretty much Stjepan's way or the highway although Margaret did have her moments too. Both parents were strict and did their best to shelter their children from other people. Due to the Milat children playing amongst themselves and not having any outside experience this stunted their social skills and proper development. Ivan on the other hand, was more switched on than his siblings and quite creative although he did have a taste for guns and hunting, as he got older. 

The Milat family were and still remain quite close, close to the point where they will happily lie to protect each other from any possible harsh arm of the law. The family grew quite a reputation with the police when the children were growing up due to constant petty crime and violence. Ivan as well as his other brothers, was troubled but when it came to his sisters, he was quite gentle in the beginning and over-protective of his sisters, especially Margaret (named after his mother). Ivan and Margaret were close and when she died in a tragic car accident as a young teenager, Ivan was distraught. He had been in the car at the time and had been witness to the whole traumatic event, trying his best to save his sister but it was too late. Some people believe that this was the moment when things turned even darker for Ivan. More tragedy was to follow when one of his brothers was left brain damaged after an accident and needed 24 hour care. Ivan couldn't cope with what had become of his brother who could no longer look after himself. 

Ivan went through a period of depression and then threw himself into work to help support the family. When his father died he became even more dedicated to supporting his relatives and they depended on him greatly. However, as close as the family was, there was still conflict and drama. The brothers often fought and a lot of the time it was over women. Despite the Milat's limited knowledge of people beyond the family they did try to function in normal society and some of the brothers had relationships. Ivan was heavily into training and some people would describe him at this point in his life as quite muscular and handsome. An affair with a brother's wife developed and she was pregnant. There's different stories of who was the biological father of this child but more conflict was reported when Ivan's brother had threatened to kill him.

As with most serial killers, people can guess when their first murder occurred and with Ivan theories are that he began his horrible crimes in 1989 but those are the murders we know about. He could have begun earlier than that. Investigators have given a rough timeline of 1989 to 1992 (he was arrested in 1994). We know that he was involved in petty crime at a young age and had an obsession with guns. He'd spent some time in custody as a teenager and reportedly confessed to one of his brothers that he had killed a man but had managed to get away with it and somebody else was accused of the crime. 

Before his known taste for murdering innocent people, he reportedly robbed backpackers as well as commit sexual assault on some of the female tourists. In 1971 he was accused of sexually assaulting two women but the investigation into the case was a disaster and he basically got away with it claiming the two women offered him sex in exchange for transport. Due to Ivan's calm and collected attitude and behaviour plus the support of his family and people describing him as a great guy who was a hard worker, he was able to fool everyone and get off the hook. More accusations of sexual assault followed but he'd managed to get away with them too. 

The constant escape from proper justice enabled Ivan to carry on into his murderous spiral and he saw backpackers more and more as toys to be played with, tortured and discarded in any way that he saw fit. 

In 1984 he got married to a younger woman but the marriage was a living hell for the poor girl and very short lived. Ivan was very abusive and luckily she escaped and lived to tell the tale.

Ivan was obsessed with guns and he and his brothers often took part in shooting practice and hunting, they especially liked locations such as the Belanglo State Forest which is a beautiful stretch of woodland but is now seen as a dark and haunting place nowadays for many reasons. This was where Ivan (and many people still believe, an accomplice) took his victims. This beautiful place was where young backpackers were taken to be tortured, sexually assaulted, taunted and used as target practice before being murdered and discarded. He was reported to have murdered 7 young people between 1989 and 1992. The exact dates of when these people were murdered was not easily identifiable, all investigators had to go on was the date and time that they were reported missing. When all 7 victims were found in the forest they were in the late stage of decomposition with only parts of bones remaining. 

The known victims are reported to have been:

- 19 year old Deborah Everest and James Gibson (who was also 19). Their remains were later found in 1993. James had been stabbed and his spine severed whilst investigators determined that Deborah had been beaten, sexually assaulted and stabbed. Ivan enjoyed the sickening act of paralyzing one half of a couple if he managed to kidnap two backpackers at the same time (the manner and effort this would have taken is also why people believe that he had an accomplice) especially if one of the victims was male. The poor man would be tortured, paralyzed and then forced to watch his partner be sexually assaulted and murdered. Investigators believe that the nightmarish circumstances in which Deborah and James had met their death once again plays into the belief, the possibility that Ivan did not act alone in these murders. 

- In 1991, Simone Schmidl (21) vanished and in 1993 a skull had been found separate from skeletal remains which was later identified to be Simone. Simone had also suffered stab wounds to the skull and had her spine severed. As investigators searched the surrounding area they found clothing which had belonged to another missing backpacker.

- The clothing found at the time of Simone Schmidl's remains being discovered was later to be determined as belonging to 20 year old Anja Habschied who was originally reported missing in 1991 with her 21 year old boyfriend, Gabor Neugebaur. Gabor had been shot six times in the head by a gun later identified as belonging to Ivan. Anja had been decapitated and her head was never found. 

- In April of 1992, Joanne Walters (22) and Caroline Clarke (21) were reported missing, their remains were later found in the September of 1992. Another indication of a possibility of Ivan having an accomplice was the manner in which these two girls were murdered. Caroline had been shot in the head 10 times with a gun later identified to be one of Ivan's. Joanne had been stabbed repeatedly in a ferocious attack that left wounds to her chest, back and neck. 

As well as the horrendous things he would do to his victims, he would also rob them of their belongings, even some of their clothing which he would give to his relatives as gifts or to keep for himself. Later searches of properties relating to the Milat family revealed numerous camping equipment, photographs, luggage, clothing etc which were the items identified as belonging to the 7 victims we know about. A lot of items were not traced to their original owners. 

The police knew they had a serial killer on their hands and that the Belanglo State Forest was not only his playground but his dumping ground and how long had this really been going on for? How many victims was there still to identify? They started to look at a list of possible suspects especially anyone who had previous run-ins with backpackers and an investigator stumbled across some files relating to Ivan Milat and a British man named 'Paul Onions'.

''He Filmed His Victims After He Drugged Them'' | The Horror on Cooke Street | Serial Killer: Stephen Port

When we think of infamous serial killers, a lot of the time the usual names come to the front of our minds, Ted Bundy, Jeffrey Dahmer , Fred And Rose West, and John Wayne Gacy amongst others. I've written about so many serial murderers over the years and the stories of the past still come back to haunt us, new books are written, movies are made and documentaries pop up on Netflix which bring new found attention to these shocking cases from history that we should never forget. And then there's the shocking stories that don't get as much attention but are equally just as terrifying, stories such as the case of English serial killer Stephen Port. 

What Ted, Jeffrey, Fred, Rose and John had in common was their ability to fool people, they had a level of charisma that enabled them to gain people's trust and display an appearance of 'normality'. With Stephen Port all you had to do was look at him to see that there was something just not right with this man. I know they say you should never judge a book by it's cover but Stephen had a look of evil and creepiness that is hard to describe and I cannot be blamed for my judgment in this case, as he turned out to be even worse that any of us could've imagined.

His disturbing crimes happened not that long ago and as well as the case being horrific, the attitude of the police is again called into question in response to how they failed to investigate this case, how they ignored vital information and the disrespect to the victims and their families. We like to think that in more recent times that things have changed for the better and that's not always the case. Since this case became more wider known in the public arena, the Met police have claimed that they have trained their officers in how to deal with future cases as well as how to deal with potential and crucial information in a more respectful and timely matter....but that remains to be seen. 

So let's get into the case...

Stephen Port was born in Southend-on-Sea in Essex, England on the 22nd of February 1975. He was known to be a loner at school and wasn't quite sure as he got older what type of profession he wanted to go into. At first he enrolled in an art course but decided that he wanted to be a chef. Eventually he managed to get a job as a chef at a bus depot. In his private life, Stephen was still very much a loner and would take drugs as well as alcohol from time to time. He was homosexual and would have various sexual encounters with men who he preferred to be young (in his words 'under the age of 30' and 'Twinks' which is slang for 'young boys who are attractive and of slim build'). The boys would usually be in their 20s and he would often pay them for their time, hiring young escorts was nothing new to him. 

As well as being a man in his 40s who had a penchant for younger men, his taste for pornography was quite disturbing, echoing Jeffrey Dahmer, he enjoyed the idea of young men being drugged and unconscious as he did what he wanted with their bodies. This quickly switched from being his favourite type of 'porn' to watch, to being something that he desired to try for real. Stephen signed up to what seemed like every online gay dating site going. For someone who was a loner and not that great a conversationalist he sure had a lot of confidence when it came to meeting strangers off of the internet for sexual encounters and had no issues using his own photographs on his profiles despite looking like an odd character. His favourite sites to use were 'Fitlads', 'Sleepyboy', 'Bender' and the more known 'Grindr' (hence why he is often nicknamed 'The Grindr' Killer) 

As I always have said in previous posts relating to serial killers, there's often the victims we know about and then there's always the possibility that there are more out there who have yet to be identified. There are files upon files stacked up in boxes on shelves of every police Department you can think of that has unsolved cases going back decades, how many of them are victims of serial killers that have not yet been realised? It's a very chilling thought. 

With Stephen Port's crimes being brought to light in his 40's (his first murder was reported to have been committed when he was 39) and considering his sexual drive for controlling younger men, it's hard to believe that all of this just started as soon as he reached this part of his life. His first known victim was 23 year old student, Anthony Walgate who he had connected with via one of the dating sites. Anthony had told friends beforehand that he was going to meet Stephen in Barking, East London and gave a few details of where he was going as he told them in a joking manner ''In case I get killed''. Sadly this joke was to become a horrible reality because the young man had been found collapsed on Cooke Street where Stephen had lived after a anonymous phone call to authorities which Stephen had placed himself. When everyone arrived the young man was deceased. The investigation into Anthony's death was a mess, an autopsy was deemed inconclusive although they did determine that drugs had been a major factor. As for the strange bruises on his body, they couldn't decide if they had been the result of physical abuse or as a result of 'Hypostasis' which is when the blood stops pumping and pools in lower areas of the body. 

The police managed to trace the anonymous call back to Stephen Port and despite him having a reputation for physical abuse as well as drugging and sexually assaulting men in the past (he was never charged and did not have a criminal record at this point), the police charged him with perverting the course of justice and Stephen served a very short stint in jail. 

His second known victim was 22 year old student, Gabriel Kovari whom he also met through an online dating site. Gabriel was originally from Slovakia and had been renting a spare room from a man named John who he became very good friends with (John would later become instrumental in the eventual bringing of Stephen Port to justice). Despite enjoying living with John, Stephen had managed to persuade Gabriel (possibly with the offer of not having to pay any rent one wonders?) to move in with him. Gabriel announced out of the blue that he was moving out but promised to stay in contact with John. John was shocked and saddened to see Gabriel go and didn't want to ask too many questions about where he was going, all he knew was that Gabriel seemed to be happy about this situation. 

Gabriel had been gone for barely a week when John noticed that he'd not been returning his calls or text messages, he hadn't been online either. The sad and shocking news was soon realised when the police arrived at John's door to inform him that Gabriel had been found dead. He was discovered slumped in a graveyard by a woman out walking her dog. All signs pointed to an overdose as the police found a bottle which they had also found on Anthony Walgate's body previously. The graveyard was not that far away from Stephen's home and after further investigation it was declared that Gabriel also died from what appeared to be a drug overdose. Both Anthony and Gabriel had dangerously high levels of the date-rape drug GHB in their systems at time of death. 

John didn't feel comfortable with how the police were responding to the case and felt that something was not quite right. He began doing his own research online and discovered some very shocking details. He was able to discover connections and also spoke to Gabriel's former boyfriend who told him that he'd been informed about a gang of older men who would target young homosexual men, give them a cocktail of drugs and sexually assault them at parties.

John went to the police will all of this information and was turned away as far as they were concerned, this was not a suspicious death. 

On the 20th of September 2014, the very same lady who had previously found Gabriel, had found another deceased young man slumped up against the wall in the same graveyard. Daniel Whitworth was a chef and just 21 when he arranged to meet Stephen Port online on a dating site. Daniel was already in a long-term relationship at this time. Daniel was found in the exact same position as Gabriel but this time a suicide letter was found. In this suicide note which was described by his family and friends as being 'cold' and nothing like him at all, Daniel was supposed to have said that he had been responsible for Gabriel's death and not to blame the man he had slept with the night before. Suddenly those closest to the boys became interested in who this man was and also began their independent investigating. 

The last known murder was said to be that of 25 year old Jack Taylor who had also been found slumped over against the wall in the graveyard, exactly the same way as Daniel and Gabriel had been found. There was no disguising the fact now that a serial killer was on the loose and it's shocking that the police continued to ignore everything that friends and families of the boys were trying to tell them. 

Gabriel's friend John had even contacted some of the local LGBT support groups to see if they could get word through to the police as he was getting nowhere with them but it was the same result. The police believed there was no foul play. 

Again in this case we see the benefit of CCTV cameras in helping solve a case because it was by sheer chance that Stephen Port and Jack had been captured on camera during their meeting at the train station. Now the police decided to do their jobs and brought Stephen in for questioning, the evidence was overwhelming and finally he was put behind bars. Stephen Port has never shown any remorse for what he has done. He was given a whole life order meaning that he will never leave prison. As well as the four murders of the young boys that we know about, Stephen was also found guilty of sexually assaulting, violently physically assaulting and drugging various other young men who fortunately lived to tell the tale but are no doubt traumatised by what he put them through. 

The terrifying list of drugs that Stephen Port used on his victims are as follows Crystal Meth, GHB & GHL (which is liquid Ecstasy), Amyl Nitrate (street name: Poppers), Viagra and Meow Meow (Which is Mephedrone which produces effects that are similar to that of Cocaine and MDMA). 

Stephen Port was a dangerous predator with a history of violence and sexual abuse towards men, he should have been locked up a long time ago. Sheer ignorance and homophobia were at the forefront of this case by inexperienced and judgemental police officers and this was in 2014, not 1950. The police appeared to have the same attitude towards the gay community that they had with sex workers. Anthony Walgate, who was reported to be Stephen's first victim would sometimes do escort work as a struggling student, could this also be a factor in the lack of proper investigation by the police? As I mentioned earlier, the police have claimed that they have since partaken in more training and are now more open minded as well as more serious about such matters and their approach to any future cases, let's hope so. 

RIP to Anthony Walgate, Gabriel Kovari, Daniel Whitworth, Jack Taylor and any other possible victims who are yet to be identified. Also thinking of the numerous survivors of Stephen Port and the families of victims and survivors. A special thanks also to the incredible friends and family members as well as people in the LGBT community who tried their best to get through to the police and bring justice to the victims and their families.
