What started out as a good looking young couple in their early 20's, very much in love and who had jumped head-first into a whirlwind romance, soon became the stuff of unbelievable nightmares. Back in 2021 in Sydney, Australia, 19 year old Arnima Hayet was a beautiful young woman who had her heart set on the possibility of becoming a surgeon one day. She was a medical student and despite her young age she was very self-assured and knew what she wanted in life. Like a lot of romantic situations, people and circumstances often come along whilst we least expect it and that's what happened when Meraj Zafar came into her life.
The pair quickly became besotted with each other and spent every moment they could together, everything seemed perfect but unbeknown to Arnima when she first met Meraj, deep down he wasn't exactly the charming, romantic and well-mannered guy he was portraying himself to be. He was in-fact an utter control freak of the very worst kind. At first, his behaviour was dismissed as him just being over-protective but he was also very skilled in the way that he would play emotional and psychological games with
Arnima and being young she fell into his games. He was always very clever in how he would get around her especially after he had started to physically assault her as well as shouting. He would act romantic and full of apologies. He would promise to never do it again but he never stopped.
Despite the red flags and nervousness of friends and relatives, Arnima decided to move in with Meraj. It was all very sudden but Arnima at that time insisted everything was great.
Behind closed doors....it wasn't great, it was hell for Arnima. He was very abusive and did his best to
paint himself as man of the year. Maybe Arnima felt that she had to continue with the abuse (especially as they had gotten married pretty quickly too and sadly, those around her would tell her that she should make the marriage work), she possibly thought that things would eventually change in the relationship. However, things just got worse with Meraj being more violent, aggressive and forbidding Armina to have contact with her family and friends. Her studying and dreams of working towards becoming a surgeon one day was thrown out of the window too. Maraj was constantly monitoring her every move.
After living for months in fear of her erratic husband, Arnima planned her escape and managed to contact a friend who she confided in. One of the difficulties that also arose at this time was that Arnima found out she was pregnant, which should have been a wonderful moment for the couple and brought them closer together, but Maraj was cold as always and it didn't stop him raising his hand to her.
After many failed attempts and struggling to find the right time, Armina finally decided that enough was enough and he couldn't take the abuse any longer. She texted a friend that she was leaving him for real this time. She also told the friend how much she hated her husband.
That Sunday night of January 29th (2022) Meraj, who was already paranoid and looking to argue, struck his wife again and this time he didn't stop. He believed she was leaving him and was determined to stop that from happening. He choked his pregnant wife until she stopped breathing. Murdering his beautiful young and pregnant wife was horrific enough but what happened next was beyond believable. This monster decided he was going to fill a bathtub full of acid and place his deceased wife's body in it for 24 hours in the sick hopes that her remains would dissolve.
In the hours before her death Arnima had sent texts to a friend and attempted to contact relatives which caused concern. People who were aware of the hell that Arnima had been going through, became very concerned when she failed to respond to them. Meraj was seen acting suspicious and leaving the apartment which the police arrived at just hours later, they had to kick the door down. They found Arnima's remains in the bath partly dissolved. The poor girl was unrecognisable and it was such an evil and horrendous thing to have happened to a pregnant young woman. No time was spared in looking for Meraj and the coward handed himself in.
Meraj Zafar was found guilty of the sickening murder of his pregnant wife Arnima and was sentenced to 21 years and 6 months. He might be eligible for parole in 2038, let's hope that this monster never sees the light of day again.
RIP to Arnima and her unborn child, both who never deserved this. A beautiful and promising life just wiped out by a cruel and sadistic, controlling narcissist. My thoughts are also with Arnima's family and friends.
