*Please be aware that the details shared in this post will be disturbing. I have aimed, as always, to be as sensitive as I can be whilst not taking away from the facts of the case. If you have any questions or comments about this post or any of the cases I have covered on this blog, please email me at jocaledoniankitty@gmail.com*

As you can see from the beautiful picture above, I have chosen to cover the Sophie Lancaster case in this post. If you are outside of the UK you might be unfamiliar with this horrific and heartbreaking case which appalled the nation back in 2007 when it happened, and still leaves a devastating mark in our history. This case felt very personal to not only myself but to so many survivors of bullying and also to those of us who are or were Gothic. Coming from a small town in Scotland, back in the day I was the only Gothic girl in my town and at my high school. Whilst the other teenagers were wearing Nike and Adidas clothes, I was wearing long black coats, black lipstick, black nails, black eyeliner and my hair was long and black. You can imagine the names and rumours that went around about me, everything from ''She drinks blood and is a Satan worshipper'' to ''She looks like a member of the Addams family''. People would shout things at me in the street or stare at me, some people would ask me who's funeral I was going to and why was I such a freak?, weirdo?, monster? etc, etc.

There were times though when it did get beyond the rumours and name-calling, it got a bit scary. I did have doors slammed in my face by boys and the same boys tried to chase me and get me into a van one night. They would laugh and call me a monster. It was difficult and I must admit that those memories are very uncomfortable for me. The reason I'm sharing these personal bits of information about my experiences is because I want you to know that I've been there, I've been treated like an outsider, laughed at, ridiculed and suffered just because of how I dressed and my taste in music and lifestyle.

I think a lot of people in the Gothic and metal community can relate to my experiences and I know they have probably experienced far worse than me. I saw a picture the other day of Sophie and I never forgot what happened to her and her boyfriend Robert in those terrifying moments in the early hours of August the 11th 2007. The case hit to the heart of all of us who saw the news reports that a young 'alternative' couple who were just walking through a park on their way home, had been targeted and abused. Those of us with similar interests and style to Sophie and Robert knew all too well the experience of walking past a gang of youths and how terrifying that could be, we all experienced the name calling, maybe objects thrown at us but for Sophie and Robert, the ordeal went way far beyond the usual upsetting abuse to an absolute horrendous nightmare.

Just a short while before Sophie (20) and her long term boyfriend Robert (21) entered the park (known as Stubbylee Park in the small town of Bacup in Lancashire, UK), they had been at friend's house.  They'd even stopped off at a store where the same youths that they were to see later in the park, were hanging around. The five teenage boys asked the couple if they had any cigarettes to which Sophie and Robert gave them some and exchanged some polite conversation before leaving the store.

The five teenage boys, Joseph Hulme (17), his brother Daniel Hulme (16), Daniel Mallett (17), Brendan Harris (15) and Ryan Herbert (16) had all started to hang around Stubylee park drinking. Time was getting toward 1am and Sophie and Robert decided to cut through the park probably thinking that it would be ok because they'd seen the same boys earlier and all was fine. Things quickly took a horrific turn. For no reason at all other than they were a bunch of sick cowards, the boys decided to attack Robert. All five of them just kicking and punching him until he was on the ground, they then proceeded to continuously kick him in the head, they took turns and were laughing, cheering each other on as witnesses looked on horrified.

Sophie was screaming for them to stop and being the kind-hearted, devoted and genuine person she was, she didn't run off and leave Robert, she did all she could to try and stop them. It was soon clear that they had caused Robert some very serious internal injuries as well as external. He was covered in blood and his whole face and head had swelled up, he was now unconscious. Instead of being sickened by what they had done and panicking trying to get hold of an ambulance, they cheered and celebrated. Sophie was screaming and fell to her knees holding Robert in her arms trying to protect him from any more kicks and beatings.

The monsters then turned their attention to Sophie, kicking her until she was laid on the ground unable to protect herself from the constant blows and kicks to the head. One witness said they began stomping on her head to the point she had turned blue. Blood was everywhere and Sophie fell unconscious as the sick gang went through the couple's pockets and stole their mobile phones and other belongings. The evil monsters then walked away laughing, leaving both Sophie and Robert lying in a pool of their own blood. As the gang passed people in the street they bragged that they had 'Banged' (meaning 'beat-up') 'two Moshers' in the park. They laughed about how they had messed-up some 'Moshers' in the park and kept describing Sophie and Robert as 'Moshers'.

The whole sick and horrific ordeal had gone on in the space of 20 minutes, calls eventually filtered through to the police and ambulance services when witnesses had contacted them. When paramedics arrived at the scene they were shocked and had so much difficulty trying to recognise who was Sophie and who was Robert because both of them had such severe swelling, bruising and injuries to their heads that they were completely unrecognisable. Both were rushed to the hospital and both were in a coma. The severe injuries were so traumatic that paramedics and investigators described them as the type you would find in a car accident at high-speed.

The five boys were arrested and charged with GBH (Grievous Bodily Harm), Sophie and Robert remained in hospital in a coma and their families were distraught not knowing if they were going to make it or not. Their families never left their bed sides. Sophie's mother Sylvia wouldn't leave her side, she would do things such as read Harry Potter books for hours on end to Sophie and do her hair for her. Sylvia was an incredible mother who always supported her daughter. Sophie had decided to become a vegetarian at a young age and as she got older she became very much interested in the alternative scene, she liked to wear a certain type of clothing and have numerous piercings. She was also academically gifted and very talented. Before the horrific events of the 11th of August, Sophie and Robert had the world at their feet, Robert was a very gifted art student and they both had a maturity beyond their years. They cared a lot about people, animals and people who knew them couldn't say enough kind words about them.

13 days after the horrific attack, the decision was made by Sophie's devastated family to switch off her life support machine. It was sadly clear after numerous tests had been carried out, that Sophie was never going to be able to come back. On the very same day that Sophie's family were saying their goodbye to their beloved girl, Robert had been preparing to leave the hospital. By some miracle, Robert was able to pull through but he still had a very long way to go in recovery but he regained consciousness and was able to function to some extent. So on that very sad day of the 24th of August, Robert was able to leave the hospital into the care of his family but Sophie wasn't going home to her loved ones. The charges were switched to murder and the gang all pleaded not guilty.

The monsters were all set to go to trial. On November the 12th, Sophie's funeral was held and hundreds of people attended. It was a beautiful service and her white coffin was covered in messages that her friends and loved ones had written in tribute to her. She was laid to rest at Whitworth cemetery.

On what was to be Sophie's 21st birthday a tribute concert was held to celebrate her life and legacy. Her mother Sylvia had set up a charity in Sophie's name which she called S.O.P.H.I.E (which stood for: Stamp Out Prejudice, Hatred and Intolerance Everywhere). The organisation has been an absolute amazing way to honour Sophie and has helped so many young people and their families. The organisation provides support, guidance, educational workshops and so much more. Sylvia and her team would visit countless schools, universities and workplaces sharing the legacy of Sophie whilst helping educate and support others.

Just before the five monsters were to stand trial, Ryan Herbert changed his plea to guilty for the murder of Sophie and the attack on Robert. Brendan Harris was found guilty of the murder of Sophie after a three week trial. Ryan was originally sentenced to 16 years and 3 months but this got reduced on appeal to 14.5 years. He was released on licence in 2022.

Brendan Harris was sentenced originally to 18 years but this was reduced to 17 years on appeal. He was released this year (2026).

The other three monsters were found not guilty of murder but found guilty of GBH. Joseph Hulme was sentenced to 5 years and 10 months. His brother Daniel was also sentenced to 5 years and 10 months. Daniel Mallett was given 4 years and 4 months. All three boys were given indeterminate sentences for public protection and classed as 'dangerous offenders'. All five of these monstrosities are out of prison and back on the streets, living their lives. There's been no news of any further incidences with them so one can only hope that they have all turned over a new leaf and become better people (even though I think life should mean life and all of them should still be in prison in my opinion).

Sylvia, Sophie's incredible mother, sadly passed away in 2022. She is buried beside her beloved daughter in Whitworth Cemetery in Whitworth, Rossendale.

Robert has tried to recover and go on with his life the best he can under the circumstances. He's also been an inspiration to us all. He returned to his studies 10 years after originally undertaking them but not being able to complete them. He is a successful artist and writer who is also a fiance and is a father to a little boy. It's amazing how far he has come and the strength he has shown after everything that happened.

The S.O.P.H,I,E foundation continues to do such amazing work and so many people celebrate Sophie's legacy. The horrific story of what happened to her and Robert has never been forgotten.

RIP to Sophie! You were amazing and I know for a fact that we would have gotten on so well. Your legacy continues and we will never forget you.

I know this was a difficult post to get through and I'm so appreciative of the fact that you've taken the time to make it all the way to the end, thank you! The world lost a tremendous light with the loss of Sophie, she should be here with us right now but the cruel actions of narrow-minded monsters have made it so that it can never be. Five kids from unsavoury backgrounds decided to do this, it was their idea of fun and the knowledge that they are back out on the streets is an utter disgrace. Some people believe in rehabilitation and the ability to change but when it comes to those five monsters, at any age this would be sickening but they were teenagers, teenagers doing this stuff, they left two innocent people on the ground, covered in blood after they brutally attacked them and they just walked away laughing and bragging. All of them should have been locked up with the key being thrown away. I don't think that it's fair that they were able to have a second chance at life after what they did. I know there's nothing I can say or do to change the circumstances but the fact that Sophie is so very much remembered and people talk about her all the time, that provides some comfort.
