My favourite Christmas songs of all time | #Blogmas day 6

I love Christmas songs, especially the classic ones. At the moment I've got Christmas songs playing all the time in my house on the lead up to Christmas. I've put together a list of some of my favourites. I have so many favourites and it was hard to narrow it down but I've tried my best, here's my top 20 Christmas songs....

1) Do they know it's Christmas - Band Aid (1984)

I love this song, it brings back a lot of memories of childhood and Christmas. I love the 80s and this has that classic 80s sound with a little bit of traditional music thrown in. I wasn't such a fan of the other remakes of this song though.

2) Last Christmas - Wham

Who doesn't love this song? I couldn't listen to it for a while when George died but I've started playing it again as a celebration of him. As soon as I hear this song I feel Christmassy. It's beautiful!

3) Wonderful Christmas time - Paul McCartney

This is another song that makes me feel Christmassy as soon as I hear it. I think it's such a happy and positive song.

4) Mistletoe and wine - Cliff Richard

In the UK it's not Christmas if there's not a little bit of Cliff Richard in there. During the 80s and early 90s Cliff was known (and to some he still is) as the king of Christmas. He has quite a few Christmas classics under his belt and this is just one of them.

5) I wish it could be Christmas everyday - Wizzard

This is a classic and it always makes me feel instantly Christmassy. Another reason I like to play this song is because I got a selection box (in the UK we have chocolate boxes for kids) for Christmas when I was younger and it came with a free cassette tape, there was two songs on it and this was one of them, I thought it sounded fun.

6) Step into Christmas - Elton John

Such a classic and fun song!

7) Merry Christmas everyone - Shakin Stevens

This is the perfect Christmas party song, it also reminds me of Christmas parties at school as a kid.

8) A winters tale - David Essex

This is such a nice song and it's been covered so many times.

9) Driving home for Christmas - Chris Rea

This song brings up memories and thoughts of people travelling on Christmas eve either from work, Christmas shopping or to visit family and friends.

10) I believe in Father Christmas - Greg Lake

This is a real classic which is quite hard to find these days.

11) Run Run Rudolph - Chuck Berry

A lot of people remember this from the Home Alone soundtrack. It's so catchy and you instantly think of Home Alone when you hear it.

12) The Christmas Song - Nat King Cole

I think this is one of the most beautiful Christmas songs ever written. My favourite line ''So I'm offering this simple phrase to kids from one to ninety-two, although it's been said, many times, many ways...Merry Christmas to you".

13) When a child is born - Johnny Mathis

This is such a lovely Christmas song.

14) The power of love - Frankie Goes To Hollywood

Beautiful song and the video is gorgeous as well.

15) All I want for Christmas is you - Mariah Carey

This may surprise a few people but this is a song I play maybe once or twice around Christmas. I like the song but it gets played to the death. I really like her version of 'O Holy Night' too, it's amazing!

16) Rockin around the Christmas tree - Brenda Lee

This is another classic that a lot of people will remember and instantly think of Home Alone when they hear it.

17) God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen - The Platters

I love various versions of this song, I think I like it best when done by a choir. The same with the song 'O Holy Night', I love Mariah Carey's version but hearing a choir sing it really gives chills down the spine.

18) Fa La La - Justin Bieber ft Boyz to Men

I bet you're like ''Wow Jo, you picked an up to date one'' LOL!!!! OK, so this isn't a classic but it's on my playlist along with his 'Mistletoe' song (hands over eyes). I just think they're sweet songs and they're very Christmassy.

19) Fairytale of New York - The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl

Such a classic and a good one to sing on Christmas karaoke lol!

20) Christmas Vacation - Mavis Staples

From the classic movie 'Christmas Vacation'. It's such an uplifting song!

OK, I'll stop at 20 otherwise we will be here all night! I just realised that there's actually so many Christmas songs that I love and it's far more than 20! My Christmas playlist runs into the 100s lol.

You've probably noticed that most of my favourites are from way back when instead of the ones of today. Maybe it's an age thing but I don't feel that the Christmas songs of today have the magic, sense of wonder and tradition that the classics have. I'm not saying there's not some good ones, just not on that classic level! (in my opinion).

I wonder if you've heard of any of these songs, let me know in the comments below! I would love to hear what's on everyone else's Christmas playlist.

See you in the next #Blogmas post x
